Opening the trunk/hatch?
On this forum and also several times in Roundel, GT owners have mentioned that you can open the small trunk using the center latch/button and you can open the larger hatch using the one on the right side.
I always thought that the authors of these posts/letters simply were getting their lefts confused with their rights. My GT is the exact opposite. The center operates the larger hatch and the button on the right operates the small truck. Did this change for the '12 model year? |

Don't know, mine (2011) opens the larger hatch with the one on the right. What does your owner's manual say? That should track with reality; otherwise, yours might have a wiring defect. Not a big issue as long as you know and everything else works okay.

My 2011: right opens the large hatch cover, center the small door.

Which lid does your internal release open? My 2011 button releases the small trunk lid.

My internal release button opens the large hatch. The key fob does the same, press and hold to open the large hatch.

I've driven both 2010/2011 and currently own a 2012 GT.
Sometime either late 2011 build or for MY 2012 onwards there was a change on how the hatch buttons work. PRE 2012 - Center button and button inside car and 3rd button on the remote open the small trunk lid. Side button (to the right) opens the large lid, same as 4th button in the remote. MY2012 and on - Exact opposite as before... Center button/Button inside car/3rd button on remote open the large hatch. Side button in trunk lid/4th button in remote opens the small lid. Btw these functions can be changed by coding. (I changed the 2011 I had for a while to work like this). |

Liftback Issue Solved
Thanks to the posts here I was able to figure out my issue with the liftback opening by itself. My fob doesn't have left or right buttons, they are vertical. There is a button with a diamond on it. That is for the panic alarm. What I didn't know was that it is also for the lights "follow me" or whatever they call turning the lights on briefly, and if pressed for 1 second it opens the liftgate.
So - 1/2 second is lights, 1 second is liftback, 3 seconds is panic. All this boils down to the fact that it is possible I set off the liftgate by pressing the diamond button inadvertantly for exactly 1 second! Note to service advisor - the fob will open the liftgate. |

2013 535i GT
the center opens the full hatch and the latch on the right opens the small hatch on ours ....I am sure it just depends on the factory that day and who is making the connections, I am sure it makes little to no difference....personally I like our set up.
