E36 headlight lens restoration - results

Thought I'd post up my results of doing a headlight restoration on my E36. I used 3M's kit that I picked up at Autozone for $25.

So first, a before pic:

A close-up of the passenger-side lens, driver-side was just as bad, didn't get a pic of it tho. This is how they looked AFTER I thoroughly washed them with soap and water.

Passenger-side after restoration:

Full view with driver-side restored, passenger yet to receive treatment.

Full view with both restored.. I couldn't be happier with how they turned out, they appear new.

No problem. Yeah my local autozone had 4 different headlight restoration kits. The 3M one for $25.. the Meguire's one for $25.. one from Rain-X for $16, and one from TurtleWax for $10. The meguire's kit is a one step process.. the 3M kit is much more involved. On another site I posted my results at, someone asked about the process.. here's a cut n paste of that:

Yeah it's basically a 4-step process, using a standard household drill. You start with a 500-grit (I think) disc to remove major imperfections and any hazing and yellowing. Then to a 1500-grit if I remember correctly. Then wet sand with 3000-grit, and then finally a polishing compound on a textured sponge disc.

Looks new again. Once I get tired of the smoke look I'll have to do this to mine.

Yes they are plstic. True euro-spec E36s got glass.. US-spec got plastic with the exception of the M3s, they got glass.

I should note these restoration kits are for plastic lenses ONLY! If you have glass, I don't know if they can be restored. Perhaps someone else has experience with this?

Na, US-spec M3's got plastic, too. There's just no justice in this US-spec world we live in.

Thanks for posting this. What did you use to protect the area around the headlights to keep from scratching up the paint?

Just use some painter's tape, that's what I used with the one-step kit.

Cool. Think I might do this over the weekend. I have a couple cars that could use it.

I did the same thing with my old headlights with turtle wax headlight lens cleaner from autozone. Cost me around $10 and it came out just as purdy. Looking good!

Is it (the 3M kit) a two stage process; where one is pure chemical and the other involves sanding with polishing compound and fine grit pads?

I have the Meguire's compound, it's like using a polish that already has the abrasive in it. I've used it on several vehicles and it works great. the multistage process I can only envision working even better.

Strange, my buddies '95 M3 has glass lenses, it's US-spec and bone stock.

The 3M kit comes with green masking tape to mask off the areas surrounding the headlight, and they include plenty.

It's a 4-stage process, no chemicals.. two stages of dry sanding, one wet sand, then polishing compound.

Somehow missed you in the multiquote above.. just to let you know the lenses (yes, just the lenses) are available on eBay.. I've seen glass and plastic both. Seen them for the foglights too.
