Unhappy 2010 535xi engine issue- NEED HELP!!

Looking form some advice. I recently bought (7/2012) 2010 535xi with 44,000 miles. Last week brought it to my local BMW dealer, with 49,900 miles, to have state inspection done and have them look at anything that may be needed before my bumper to bumper expires. I asked about some hesitation I was getting on cold am- not sure there was an issue, I previous had 2000 540i 6 speed, I think it was just the new automatic. Overall the car drove like a dream, no issues, just wanted them to go through it. Mechanic said some leaking on oil housing needed to be fixed (seemed weird due to no signs of oil leak). So picked up the car and drove it 1 mile and engine shuts down. After 2 days of no answers they tell me today the head mechanic is baffled and has been working with BMW trouble shooting to determine the issue. Second call today is the engine was stuck in 3rd gear and engine seized. Working on lower engine block.
I am not a mechanic and although this is my second BMW, I donít know too much about the possible cause or how I should approach this with the dealer. Anyone know of a problem with this engine? Although under warranty I am concerned with long term issues. Please let me know what you would do? Love the car but donít want to be stuck with a lemon.

All I can say is WOW!
Unless there was no oil in the car, or smbdy dropped smth into engine. One time I saw the same thing with MB when they forgot to install new air filter, in other words no filter at all at the official dealer in LA!! Car drove for a wheek until it started giving CEL and no compression in 3 cyls. And funny part there was no way to prove it wasn't there bc invoice said it was replaced.

Good news is the car is under warranty, so let BMW wrestle with it. Sounds weird, but hopefully they will replace a bunch of parts and get it running like new.
Did you check the ownership issue before buying? If it changed hands a lot recently then it could be a lemon.

Help needed- questions to ask

I did not check too deep into past history. I do know it was one owner lease. It is BMW certified and they showed me everything that was done (normal items: breaks, pads, oil change & spark plugs) plus it had the remainder of bumper to bumper. The car is super clean- not a scratch or dent. Thought I was buying a new car with some highway miles. Well we will see what they say. Any suggestions on questions I should be asking? I suspect maybe they made a mistake when fixing the oil housing. But how do I prove it??

Yes. They said it was stuck in 3rd gear and seized. Looking at lower block? As I was driving give it some gas and lost power & engine shut down.

Extended warenty or new engine?

Thatís my concern. I am now worried about this car long term- keeping it or selling it. Should I demand BMW give me a extended warranty? Anyone have any experience negotiating something like this? If they are replacing parts of the engine- is there any reason I should push for a new engine? I do not know yet what they plan on doing to fix the problem but want some ammo and advise what to do? All the help is much appreciated. After making this investment a few months ago- never expected to be dealing with this nightmare.

If they install new block and other new parts it's pretty much new engine. But new is new anyways

helll yeah 2300 for the maint. and another 4800 or so for the extend plat warranty . you will be covered to 2017 though. Why isn't this car sitting at a dealer you should have a loaner as well, this is the major caveat to owning and driving this car.

it helps to have the proper income and when owning these vehicles, I'm not knocking you but they're just not for everyone. They are beautiful machines with tendencies of a temperamental high maintenance B!tch.

good luck dude!

Beyond that - I never bought extended warranty for any car I have ever owned. Yet for my 2008 535 xi it has been worth it - in the last 3 months alone I have had several thousand of dollars of repairs under extended warrranty and the car is going in again on Tuesday. I am at 57K miles btw.

Thanks for the advice. Im going to see what they propose and make sure this car will be worth keeping. Otherwise a trade up will be a good option.

First thing, the engine does not get stock on any gear, that would be your transmission. Does not matter what they do, the new parts will come with at least 2 years warranty which means even if you have problems later on you are only going to pay for labor.

Just heard back from BMW delership: "engine seized # 6 cylender- conecting rods and main bearings cause the failure. Spun and lack of oil? Not sure why they will have to send parts back to BMW to determine why" Waiting to hear back from BMW on if they will replace just lower block or new engine.
Crazzy this happen with under 50,000 miles.

It's all a game. They know exactly what happened. Engine dying 1 mile after service... there is no way in hell this was a random failure. Now they're just trying to confuse you so that you don't sue them. Get a lawyer and have them buy back the car.

If they replace the engine, demand an extended warranty. New engine is great if they include warranty. Better than gettting another used car.

But wth? 2010 with 44k miles? I wouldnt even look at such vehicle

May have to due with the fact , that according to BMW it would have only required 2 oil changes @ that mileage.

run run run . you can put miles on these cars but you should have or the previous owner should have been through many oil changes. the motor seals will start to rot without proper lubrication and hard driving.

Get a new engine or make them buy the car back.

That's totally lemoned right there.

I'd be in full war paint if I were in your shoes. Smoke coming out my ears. Redrum, redrum......

Thanks for all the suggestions! Really helped when I talked with BMW.
So here is where I am at:
100% band new engine on its way from BMW factory. They are providing 2 year unlimited mile warranty on the engine.
I think I am happy. I think I am ahead here.. as long as I do not have any other issues like transmit ion or electrical.
Any opinions if I should try to walk and trade it in toward another used 2010 or 2011??
Any questions I should be asking in relation to putting in a new engine?
Thanks again!! I would buy you all a beer if I could.. Cheers!

You've had the car for 3 months and 6K miles and they are putting a new motor in it.

I wouldn't deal with this car anymore. The dealer wants you to keep it so they can keep the sale....BMW is picking up the tab for the repairs.

I would have parked this car in front of the dealer with a giant yellow lemon painted on the side.......
