If you expect the HK system to sound like a professional aftermarket install you will be disappointed. If you've gone down this road before, don't bother with upgrades like those from Bavsound, etc. It won't make enough difference.

If you've never had a professional aftermarket install you will probably think it sounds great.

My main complaint about the HK system is the lack of bottom end but otherwise it's "good enough". I've gone down the pro route before (in my previous car) and I just don't really want to spend another $5,000-10,000 on a stereo. I have added an LC2i + amp + subwoofer to the HK system and I am reasonably happy now. But I can see myself eventually upgrading the front components, which will probably necessitate another amp. The stock ones are pretty harsh at high volume.

Was it worth the ~$900 upgrade? Probably. $900 would not get me very far in the aftermarket.

Hi guys,

Could anyone please comment on the audio quality of the HK system in the newer F36 GC series, especially the '18 LCI model ?
Does it have a line equalizer or just that basic 3-setting sound correction setup ?

Thank you in advance !!

p.s. if someone could please test it out with "S.P.Y. - Step & Flow" or "Document One - the Rhythm" - that would be awesome !

It is worth it, I've had the hi-fi (not the base) sound in my E92 and this HK system blows it out of the water. You get more speakers, logic 7 sound, clearer sound, maybe not that deep bass, but you can tell it's miles better than stock for sure. Besides, for the price you can't go wrong as any comparable aftermarket solution would probably end up costing likely more.

I think it is a very good option. I've never heard the base system, but the HK is very good if you play music instead of listening to CNN all day.

I have the HK and while itís slightly better than average, the standard audio in BMW is unacceptable for a car like it.

HK is a good compromise if you like music and don't want to spend 6-7K on good aftermarket system. If you are an audiophile HK is not going to cut it for you.

This conversation is so incredibly subjective... What source are you listening to? If it's an iPod then ANY system will only sound so "good" but what the hell are we comparing it to anyway?

It's not an expensive upgrade if you already got the Premium Package (or Exec... cant remember which is the prereq). If you're financing/leasing the car it's going to amount to an incredibly small difference in payment, and NOT having it will likely hurt you in the resale value so why the hell not just go for it? We all know BMW stock sound systems are never top of the line...

PS it sounds great so far -- listening to various lossless tracks via Tidal on USB. Logic7 surround definitely improves the 'feel' and the soundstage. Haven't done any tweaking / EQ'ing yet
