E30 (1982 - 1993)
God's Chariot. The E30 was produced primarily from 1982 through 1991. The cabriolet was the one exception which was produced through 1993. |

Do you guys get upset when people put ///M Badges on non-///M cars?
I'm new to the world of BMW, and ive noticed a ton of Bimmers out there with ///M badges, that are almost certainly non ///M cars. Do you guys frown upon this? Or is it accepted? I have a 318i and I feel like I would only get laughed at for putting the badge on my car. Its not like it makes it go any faster...

Those in the know giggle and point - those who are not, just think M cars are not that fast after all. Personally not for me - put the money towards some other project for your car.

My car had a badly glued on M badge on the light grill which I removed as soon as I could find new grills: it always felt like false advertising to me. However, for everything else M badges are o.k. - from what I've read the M stands for "motorsport" so if you buy an M shifter, seat or steering wheel then it's fine to have it badged as such.

upset, not at all. i just remember that most people are stupid and some of those people manage to get their hands on a BMW.

To make the answer clearer. It is frowned upon.
Not as bad as this but still:

an ///M badge on a non-///M car is a factory option these days. BMW are sell outs, and the badge isnt worth half of what it used to be worth.

it is like you are writing turbo or V8 on a 4 cylinder car so it is misleading for people who dont know

E30 M3 had a 4 cylinder. That baby was pretty quick for its time.

To be contrary to most of the other posters here I don't care what badging is on your car: if you're passionate about your ride, take care of it and drive it in the spirited manner it was intended to be driven (as often as you can) then you're o.k. by me. Maybe I don't even care so much about that last item as long as the first two apply. If you own and love your BMW then you're in the club, even if you have douchey tendencies.
But if I meet you and it's obvious that you're only concerned with personal appearance then I'll probably think less of you for being shallow. |

that is the only reason to slap an M badge on a non-M BMW. the only reason to put an M badge on is to make yourself look better. which can work, but only to people who have no idea what that is. the people who know BMW and what that badge is are not impressed and actually frown upon what you've done. it's like slapping a Cummins diesel badge on your gas powered 4 cylinder s10 pickup.

NO doesn't bother me. Look, the M or M- Technic is an option for BMWs. It includes body kit, rim, suspension and interior upgrades. Folks have been putting M series body kits, suspension and engine swaps on 3 and 5 Series BMWs for years. The fact is, you never now what you're up against. So continue to laugh at the guy with an E30 318i with an M badge on the grill.... some guys do it for the sleeper effect, cheaper insurance, who knows. Not knowing that he has an S52 lurking under the hood, could result in you getting you feelings hurt.

An ///M badge on a car is totally fine if it actually has M-tech parts such as suspension upgrades or sport body kit. its not like people see it and its an M3. I have an AC Schnitzer badge front and back of my E34 because its got ACS body kit and wheels, but it doesnt have an S5 or M5 badge, even though its quicker than a genuine S5 or M5.
I have an E36 318iS in my driveway that has an M3 badge on the back. i feel so bad driving it around lol
