Jim, Look here! 325CI smokes and stuck in "Limp Mode" Littel help?

Howdy All!! Newbie here!
My buddy has an 03 325CI w/151K on it.
The vehicle has sat for almost a year. We put a new battery in it and it fired right up. It appears to be stuck in "Limp Mode" (2nd or 3rd? gear). It did not reset by following the directions in the owners manual. If we take the oil fill cap off while it is running the car continues to run but it smokes like crazy! When we put the cap back on it eventually clears up. Where should we start looking? Hopefully this has been covered before and you all can steer us in the right direction. OH! there are no/zero codes picked up on a standard OBDII.
Thanks in advanced for the timely responses!

Likely needs a new oil separator (aka CVV) and new plugs. Very common issue

Thanks for the reply smolk! CVV? What (acronym) does that stand for? Is that something the average Joe can do? Is there a write up somewhere, maybe?
Thanks!

CVV= Crankcase Ventilation Valve, also known as Oil Seperator. DIYs do exist. Use the search to find them. Apparently, it's time consuming, but not actually difficult. Just a lot of removing and plugging new stuff back in. But it's buried deep so a bit of a pita to get to.

Are there any codes? My car went in limp mode when a shop did not re-attach the transmission harness properly. If the car sat for a year, maybe rats got under the hood (yes they do that) and something got loose?? Where in MD are you from?

Actually it did finally throw a code(s). P1345 and P0135. I am hoping they are all related to the limp mode. The car is in Crofton. Any thoughts?

First code is misfire in cyl #2 and the other is broken o2 sensor most likely. misfire could be caused by a broken o2 sensor though.

The misfire can yes. But the most common issue that causes limp mode is the idler control valve. Just a week ago I was flooring it in my car and I was redlining it and it stuck open and then went into limp mode. Had to pull off the road and restart the car and than everything was fine.

p.s. It's MMV and the V stands for my name which is Van

Gotcha, MMV,

I think we may start with the O2 sensor then. Would this make it smoke up with the oil fill cap too? or do you have any thoughts on that?
Thanks!

Humm oil filer cap... no not exactly. How the coolant level look? has the car ever overheated? is the CVV ok?

I dont know the history really but the CVV idea has been tossed around a bit. I am not really sure what it does. Would that throw the limp mode or those codes? You have a ball park idea how much $ that is?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crankca...ilation_system

There a bit pricey with all the parts together.

But it definitely could cause a few problems. Valve cover gasket to go bad, smoke coming out of the exhaust/oil filer cap area and a lot of oil consumption.

MMV, I appreciate your patients with me, really!

The smoke thing is very weird! While the car is running there is no smoke. If you take the cap off while it is running it starts to smoke like a smoke generator (white). If you put the cap back on it dissipates/clears up. If that makes any sense....or if that is even normal for these vehicles, I dunno.

If this was your gem, where would you start?

Again, I truly appreciate you patients and attention!!!

I would start with the CVV (crankcase ventilation valve). If you have check engine light on check all the codes again and it should tell you if it's bad or not. Keyword should.

The fact that the smoke isn't coming out of your exhaust is good though. Oh and one last question does the smoke smell sweet by any chance? and is there any coolant loss?

This is good stuff, Brother!

Although the smoke is white I did not notice a sweet/coolant smell....but I wasn't trying to get a whiff of it. The vehicle is not here at my house, however! I will ask him to get it to smoke again and ask him to sniff around a little. If the CVV sounds like a good place to start (I think those are a problem in these and with 155K it may be time to troubleshoot and replace it) I will let him know (actually, he is not registered but I think he is watching this thread). Either way it goes, I will keep you posted on the progress..as slow as it may be.

Again MMV, you have been a HUGE help!
YOU DA MAN!!!
