5 series problem, help!!!

hi all,
im new to all this, iv had my 5 series automatic for about 3 months, bought it as had always wanted one, its a 2001 model, full mot and done 100k.

tonight whilst driving home, i heard what sounded like id driven over 3 drains, a rattling metal sound. following this for a split second there was a loud chirping, squeeling noise constantly. i stopped and when reving in idle there is no noise at all, just a nice purr as normal.

so i carried on as i needed to get home, the chirping continued and then a hissing sound which was now and again. this sounded like a converter when you change gear.

i stopped for about 20 mins to see if a garage was open but not luck, so i got some petrol and started up again and continued to drive, after about 5 mins the chirping stopped and my car sounded normal again.

one thing i will mention is that it had been heavily raining, and also my car was literally empty on petrol, after filling up and driving for 5 mins the noise stopped, could this be anything to do with it as driving on a empty tank can cause more air than fuel and can cause issues.

any help would be appreciated before i take it to a mechanic and get shafted

thanks in advance

Hi,

No, its not possible to tell what could be wrong based on this limited information!

You need to have the car checked over carefully and particular attention to the drive shafts, suspension components, wheel bearings, gearbox, pulleys, belts.. etc etc etc....

You might want to also look over on bmw5.co.uk as it's a UK centric website and bimmerfest here is 99.8% USA centric - as such, they didn't get the 520i as their petrol is so very cheap anyway!

Cheers, Dennis!
