noob with a question

Hi all thinking about taking the plunge into bmw ownership. I have about 5k to spend and i found a 1998 528i 5spd. For a bmw it really doesnt haven to many extras. Doesnt even have a sun roof. Anyway the car is high mileage. She has 215k on it but one owner and has all service records since brand new. It has been dealer maintained it entire life. Both the interior and exterior show very little wear are in excellent condition. Entire car was fully detailed and the engine is so clean you could eat off it with no signs of any leaks anywhere. Drove the car nearly 30miles on my test drive and it drove super tight. He is asking 3k and i think it very fair price for such a clean well maintained bmw. Plus i will have close to 2k for any sort of surprise in the near future. I just want to hear some opinions from more expericned owners if something like this can be a good reliable car.

that clean of an engine would have me a little paranoid, usually only that clean to hide signs of leaks, but make sure cooling system has been overhauled from head to toe and read up on the DIYs here and you will be more confident in your decision. with 5k though you could be looking at something more minimal in the miles area, yet ALL SERVICE RECORDS being available is a huge PLUS

Check for accidents and buy it..don't worry about the mileage if it's properly maintained.

At that mileage or any mileage for that matter, get the vehicle inspected thoroughly before pulling the trigger. I prefer the e39's with the M52B28 engine which the 98 does have. The simplicity is great. 5 speed is an added plus, only thing i would change about mine.

i was a bit concerned with how clean the engine was too. But after start up i checked over the entire car while the engine was running then checked underneath the car and around the engine as much as i could and saw no evidence of any leaks. We then took it for a pretty long test drive. Both on back roads and down the high way. Before we returned we actually stopped at the dealership where the car had been maintained from new. The owner of the car was very friendly with the techs and the shop foremen was his relative and he offered to toss the car on the lift real quick for me to take a look if i wanted. It was extremely dry and leak free under the whole car. Didnt pull any wheels to see the condition of the brakes but it stops nicely and smoothly.

Check if they did any suspension work on it. How old are the struts/shocks? Was the clutch ever replaced?

So you feel better buying a car with a dirty engine bay?

Mileage is not really a big deal if it has been properly maintained.

not necessarily that, but engine bay that clean would make me wonder a tad more.

@OP sounds like you may have a good deal on your hands as long as its been maintained well and they have service records, and things are looking well then you should go for it...
