Fog lights

The rear fog light works. Yes only one on the drivers side brake light panel.

The front fog/day lights have no button/switch.

Does anyone know if the 2003 E46 has front fog lights connected as standard, or are they just dummy plastic covers.

Rear fog lights? What are you talking about? Also, the front fog lights and daytime running lights are two different things. Not quite sure I understand your questions.

^ There are rear fog lights for sedans and you need a euro LCM.

OP is from Australia....other countries get different models & options than we do.

Well, OK then....sorry. I still don't know why you would need rear fog lights, but what do I know?

To prevent OTHER cars from running into you from behind in the fog....happens all the time....

If they are so good, then why don't we have them here in the states?

A large portion of europe is either coastal or close enough to have coastal weather thus massive fog issues. Not a common problem in the US.

We *do*....Audi, Porsche, several others have them....BMW is just not with the program for whatever reason.

And judging from how many people I've seen driving in pea soup fog with NO lights whatsoever, most Americans aren't smart enough to turn on rear fog lights even if they did have them.

The also have those annoyingly bright blue hid bulbs!
I bet they regreat them come the foggy season since you cant see a thing with them

Most people have that good ol` ass-backwards mentality....they don`t know how to use their fogs properly, which is in concert with parking lights only (unless they have bi-xenons, or something else with a razor-flat horizontal cutoff line) so the headlights don`t reflect off the fog, right back into your eyes. Fogs only throw a short puddle of light out in front of you, but the whole idea is to proceed *slowly*....it`s FOGGY out there, nah`mean ?

I am not familiar with the features found on Australia-specification cars. But in general, front foglights were optional on European versions of the 318i. The rear foglight is normally standard (Euro). BMW sells a front retrofit kit in most markets, which includes the front foglights, wiring, and necessary trim pieces. The headlight switch is sold separately.

All of my Merc's had one too... drivers side... reason there is one is so it's not mistaken for brake lights. Audi (especially the A6) and Jag seem to have two.

People misuse them ALL THE TIME! As if they don't know they are on at all... super annoying at night when there is no fog.

My old 528e had a rear fog light now that I think about it.

Atleast according finnish law it's not even allowed to have two, if car have two when imported then other should be made blank.

Anyway...

Are those original front fog lights any use in fog?
This car didn't get them from factory and i have intake in place of left fog light now, but those fog lights would be easy to install even afterwards.

My old Volvo had both rears active. My new Volvo only has the driver side active. The BMW do not offer the rear fogs on any US model. I actually like the rear fog option. It works great for getting the a-holes off your rear bumper. Just flip the switch and the whole ass end lights up. You can see the headlights from the tail gater nose dive.
