How to remove and replace face plate console

My son owns a 1987 535 i with an after market radio. Unfortunately he parked it on the street in San Francisco and needless to say someone broke into the car and ripped out the radio. I am trying to do some damage control and put the face plate back together and re install a new radio. We started to disassemble the face plate console but could not figure out the sequence of what needed to be removed. I did not want to get to far down the road before seeking advice as to how to disassemble and re assemble the face plate. I looked all over to find a diagram but with out success. Is there a specific order as to what has to be removed? Is there a diagram or description some place that might help?
