E30 (1982 - 1993)
God's Chariot. The E30 was produced primarily from 1982 through 1991. The cabriolet was the one exception which was produced through 1993. |

Can't get tie rod assembly off steering rack
I've tried channel locks, vice grips, even a 32mm combo wrench, and it won't budge. It is a right hand thread right?(lefty loosey). Should I buy a pipe wrench and try that?
Help please P.S. yes the locking tabs are bent back |

Big vise with pads to hold rack - RFB Stiltsons (?) to grip and turn tie rod.

Try this trick here
http://www.youtube.com/watch?nomobile=1&v=qjoteWdUdC4 Hope that link works if not just google/youtube two spanner trick. This trick has been invaluable for me when working on suspension and steering parts. But basically you just need more leverage and try using a short jerk rather than a smooth pulling action. I also just did this and needed to get a thin 32mm spanner for my inner tie rod ball joint, it is a e36 but would be similar I would think. Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710a using Bimmer App

I know a short jerk. He is always around and wants to borrow tools.

or you could go try a 4foot pipe wrench if youre changing the inner and outer tie rods.
but yes jerk it. the harder you jerk the quicker it releases and the more pain youll be in.

I went out and bought a torch and pipe wrench. Worked like a charm!

Actuallly the purpose of the tie rod removal was to replace the rack. So i wasn't to concerned about ruining the already ruined seals
