Are you referring to the DM-TL? If so, it's behind the left rear fender liner.

540i Fuel Vent Valve

Not the DM-TL, Vent Valve is supposed to be located between the Charcoal Canister and Throttle Body.

Very easy to replace! My tip is to get a U type tool that can be used to get the hose off, i had to really struggle with A flat screw drive, even using the old valve for leverage was hard, the hose is on there good, even when you take off the clamp. Then after frustration, i took my U shaped panel removal tool and presto, hose came off in seconds. Tip, replace the hose clamp on the hose you need to pull off, it's a very odd style clamp and i didnt like how it was a pita to compress/release so i replaced with a normal one.

Last tip, do it when the car is cold.

It's located in the front of the drivers side head under the hood.

Very easy---the plastic clamp to release the valve is a bit tricky--the first time you do it.
It presses INWARD to release the valve---but if you take off the 2 hose clamps you
bypass this procedure.

15 minute job--the first time---make sure you look at the flow direction--as I recall it is possible to put it on Backwards.

There was thread recently on where to order it---A BMW dealer in Md or Va.
On line it was a lot less expensive than going to the dealer.

Sorry, I threw away my paperwork when I sold the car 2 months ago.
