Called BMW Assist and obtained my password.

How long should it take to locate my car (engine off, doors locked)?

It’s taking my phone a very long time (5-10 minutes).

I think the answer for you is the email address associated to your car. If your son's car has your old email address registered with BMW, the info will go to his car. Have your son change the email address to the 335 to his own, then re-register your email to your 5.

I live and die by the system because I use my car for a ton of business travel. My experiance is when I'm in certain areas and especially at home, it sometimes takes 3 hours because I live in a rural area in central Jersey. But even if I start driving in the direction of my first destination and receiving a strong signal, it still can take a few hours for delivery of the email.

But if I'm in virtually any other area, the email is received within an hour or almost instantly.

I'm not sure if this is a possibilty, but maybe the system will attempt to send the email 2 or 3 times and if unsuccessful because of the signal, it than moves to a longer duration.

Just taking a stab based on my 2 years working with it and 66k on the odometer.

This can be tricky because there are several different things going on. The request getting to you car, your car locking on a GPS fix, transmitting it back, then reporting it back to you.

I notice you live in NY, do you park in a garage, near tall buildings, does your car have NAV? What MY? All will/may affect.

Thank you for your reply, miamiboy. I live on Long Island, don't park in my garage, but in my driveway, there are no tall buildings nearby, and have great cell signal in and around my home. The car is a 2011 750Li, and it has navigation...

The reason I asked is because tall buildings (called urban canyons) can impede locking on a GPS signal. Also, I asked about navigation because I am not sure if BMW uses the onboard GPS for BMW assist, or uses something cellular related. Let me see what I can find out.

As for cell signal - I am sorry but I doubt you can tell. I expect that your car still uses 2G technology where your phone is likely 3G or 4G of some kind.

I would agree with this as well. It's not instant, but it's usually there by the time I walk away from the computer and go to the car.

I believe that is the problem as well but so far we have not been able to get BMW Assist to remove my email address from the 2011 335i. They keep trying to tell us we both have to go a dealer together and have them correct it. We’ve both explained to them we are 1,000 miles from each other but it’s not registering in their thought processes yet.

The bright spot is my son says he now knows exactly where to find a Starbucks here in San Antonio in his rental car when he and his family are here for Thanksgiving.

OK - Confirmed that the system since 2008 uses AT&T 2G technology (called Edge). You probably are in a bad coverage area. Unfortunately the only way to know is to use an old 2G phone or a current phone in "field test menu" turned on. This will allow you to see the signal strength. (most phones don't have this option.

Sorry, I don't but since you are a buyer of BMWs flagship model I would think that your SA should be eager to please and do a search for specific areas of your interrest/concern. Good to hear that you got it fixed.
