1998 z3 2.8 gear shift feeling very sloppy
Hello again everyone!
My stick shifter seems very sloppy, loose, easy to miss shift. Is there an easy way to fix this? I imagine there is some stick guider somewhere that must be worn out. As always, I appreciate the support I get in this forum. Don't always have the cash to follow through on the fixes recommended but take one step at a time! MCDz3 |

This is quite common but can be caused by a variety of problems, but is usually one or both of these: sticking transmission shift pins or worn-out shifter bushings. Do a search here on "shift pins" and "shifter bushing" and you will find many threads to look through and consider.

The looseness points towards bushings does it not? Otherwise if you want to go down the shift pin trail these two are very good write-ups: How to remove the transmission:http://webspace.ringling.edu/~dplass...rem_trans.html
and how to do the shift pin job: http://webspace.ringling.edu/%7Edpla...hift_pins.html You will find what you need to do the job here: Tools: http://www.bimmerdiffs.com/collectio...-drift-kit-new And the parts: http://www.bimmerdiffs.com/collectio...vice-parts-kit /Per Last edited by Kornknarr; 01-02-2013 at 12:30 PM. |

Pelican Parts has a DIY article on how to replace the shifter bushings:
