Tires touching on rear fender lip
Can anyone give me advice on what to do....
I recently purchased a set of Staggered Rennen wheels 20x8.5 FR and 20x10 rear from my friend who drives a 2003 E39 M5. The wheels and tires fit perfectly on his car without any touching issues. I own a 2000 540i6 M Sport and the wheels fit perfect in the front but the back touches on the inside lip. I was told to roll the lip but comparing the two cars it looks as if his car sits about two inches higher in the back. Is the wheel well bigger in the M5 than my car? Is the suspension interchangeable on the two models? Can I use M5 springs on my struts? Are they the same? I am wondering if I could use the M5 springs to raise the ride height as well as is the springs stiffer? Thank you all for any advise given. It looks really good and I will put posts on later |

My advice: Have the fenders rolled.
But to answer one of your questions (as I'm not too sure on the others): Yes, the rear wheel wells on an M5 are bigger.

The m5 has different black plastic liners in the wheel well

What was said above. You can search this problem - it has been discussed.
Another issue you're having is that the said wheels are bigger than the biggest OEM wheel. The rear wheel you purchased has a width of 0.5" larger than OEM. Hopefully the offset is within spec. Why did your friend sell these wheels?

Hi
Running 20's can be done on any E39, provided you get all the elements required to do so done correctly. Raising your car is not the right way, it'll look 'wrong'. You shouldn't interchange M5 springs/shocks with non M cars as they're differently rated - those who go ahead anyway tend to find the car sits too high at the front etc. 10.5 rear wheels work on an E39 and are within clearance and tolderances. Have a look around here on some of the posts I've made about running 20's on an E39, to do it properly, you need to run low on coilovers and the design of the wheel is important as wheels with a deep lip blend in to the aesthetics and sizing of the car's looks much better than 'flat' faced/designed wheels. You'll most likely need to roll your rear arches and perhaps even have them pulled by perhaps 5mm or so, it'll depend on the shape of the tyre shoulder you have/run into exactly how much. Here on bimmerfest, you'll have more of the responses above as the views by most members is more of an 'oem' only level. 20's on an E39 and more importantly, done properly is in the realms of much higher levels of modifications and thus, other forums suit better where you'll get good information. Do have a look around online, speak to local reputable wheel/tyre specialists and bodyshops capable of doing this kind of work too. Cheers, Dennis! |

I am running staggered 20's on my e39 and they look great. I had to roll my fenders though and my car is lowered. As long as all aspects are proper they'll fit fine. 20x8.5 20ET 245/35r20 in front 20x10 25ET 275/30r20 in rear. I'm lowered on H&R springs and Koni adjustables.

+1. Fenders are the same...but liners are different, which gives greater clearance.
See more info here in various fixes, to include M5 fender liners, fender lip rolling, and fender pulling. http://www.bmwdiy.info/ www.bmw diy.info remove the space between bmw and diy...for some reason, the moderators are blocking the direct link.

Its a delet mod. You remove the cdv from the clutch master and reconnect the line without it.
