New 1999 Z3 Coupe
I just purchased a 1999 Z3 Coupe. Beautiful body. Mechanically sound. But needs some odds and ends interior cosmetics. I need to do the Whalen bushings. Does anyone have the size of them? I am a tool & diemaker and can make them in 15 minutes.
I have a 2000 528i I just got done bringing it all up to date. I also have a 1986 K-75 motorcycle. Thank you. |

Ask Doug Whalen, I'm sure he knows what size they are. I could go and measure a set, but I consider Doug a friend, so I won't do that.
By and large, you'll find the poeple here willing to help you out with problems, but on a request like this, you'll have to go it alone; it's not rocket science, so you'll figure it out Now with all that aside, congratulations on getting a very cool car, and welcome to the forum. No hard feelings, okay?

I understand. I am only making them for me. Not trying to undermine a business. Or go into business making them. I just thought I would make them before I tore it apart.
Thank you. |

Please apologize to Doug for me. I am a tool and die maker with 3 axis cnc's wire edm's and sinkers. I am used to making all my own parts and was putting up a first post to start conversation. I am sorry I possibly started out on the wrong foot and did not mean to offend anyone. Thanks again.

Doug's got pretty thick skin, and a similarly, if not identically equipped shop. He's probably not all that far from where you are either__geogaphical knowledge of Illinois isn't my strong suit.
Nothing would please me more than the two of you sharing a beer and a laugh over this; well, it would be more pleasing if I was in on the beer and laughing too! A decade ago, a guy who went by the screen name of "skin mechanic" (whatever happened to him?) encouraged Doug to come up with something to cure the rocking chairs; skin took on the role of development engineer, trying different materials (Teflon, oil-filled Delrin, etc.). Once satisfied, Doug started offering the bushes to anybody that asked for them__he gave away the first one hundred (100 X 8) sets. I don't remember now, but I don't think he even charged for postage. Point is, Doug's a pretty good guy, has owned at least a couple of Z3/M Rdsrts, and been one of "us" for over a decade. I'm sure that you and he have plenty of common ground, though his latest thrill is sky-diving...

Sorry that I didn't stumble onto this thread earlier. I'm just up the road, in Freeport!
Sounds like we live in parallel universes; I've been a toolmaker for 34 years, self-employed for 26 of them. PM me for dimensions, if you haven't figured it out already. Cheers, Doug

Maybe "Whalen" is becoming the generic for seat bushings....like Kleenex for tissue
