How do I reset the Service Engine Soon light, 2001 325xi?
I got gas over the weekend and the Service Engine Light came on like immediately after. I'm quite sure that dude didn't put the gas cap back on correctly (I live in Oregon, where we can't pump our own gas). Does the light go off on its own? I reset the cap as tight as I could (didn't really hear the "click" it described on the cap) ... should I worry? Does it turn off?
Thanks for any advice. |

If it was the gas cap it takes a bit for it to turnoff our you can get a scanner

Okay, thanks. I've put about 50-60 miles on this tank of gas, so I will see if it turns off on its own.

Typically it takes a number of drive cycles without the problem occurring before the MIL goes off, not miles. Not sure how many that might be though.

It'll probably go off on its own. It took about a week for my fiance's Chevy to shut off the light after the gas cap was loose.

If your cap doesn't click, it probably is the problem. Get a new one if you can't make it work.
My light usually goes off after a few miles in this instance, as a reference. |

Does it click multiple times like normal gas caps do, or just once? I can't even get it to click once, but I also noticed that it's different than most gas caps.

It does not really click. But you can feel it go inside a groove. Either way turn it all the way till you cannot turn it anymore.
