Rear trunk plastic molding noise 09 x5

Anybody have a problem with plastic molding near the back window clunking when going over bumps? Real annoying and looking for a way to get rid of it. Sounds like something you would here on and old Toyota Corolla hatchback. Everything seems secure when I tap on it.

Have the same issues with mine ... wish mine had been built in Germany ... so much for NA car makers! I stuffed felt into the areas where the plastic meets the rubber moulding near the back windows and hatch. Also, there are two (one on each side) little plastic 'covers' that squeeked like crazy on my 2009. I removed them altogether and it's much less noisy in the back (pic attached) Hope this helps.

Thanks Flogger, I will try this out. Was going to go back to dealer to see if they had any suggestions since I have only had the car for a week.

I PLAYED AROUND WITH MINE FOR A FEW DAYS ... taking those two little covers off eliminated about 90% of the noise ... keep me posted on your results ... cheers

It's perhaps interesting that on another topic I was looking at reliability data for the 2005 model year and the only BMW model in Consumer Reports that got a "much above average" reliability rating was the Z4 assembled in the US -- all of the other BMW models were average or below average.

My former 2003 X5 was built in Germany, my 2009 in the Carolina's ... no comparison ... German built wins hands-down BUT, that's just my own personal experience. My 528 and 330i were also built in Germany and they were great too. Can't speak for any BMW built outside of Germany other than the X5. And of course, where the consumer reports originated is also a factor ... European consumer reports might rate BMW's higher than North American consumer reports might ... just a thought.

Might be true, but the reliability ratings of CR are based purely upon the questionnaire responses of subscribers who own the specific vehicles, -- there is no editorial discretion in the reliability ratings. So if there is a bias in the reliability ratings, it would have to be a broad bias of the actual vehicle owners who fill-out the questionnaires.

True .... perhaps Europeans might read and respond less favorably to a North American CR (say, Road and Track) than they might a CR originating in Europe. A Ford Mustang (for example) might be rated much lower in a European CR report than an North America CR report. Who knows.

IMHO, there is bias everywhere. But based on my own experience (and that's what counts I suppose), my NA built X5 is full of rattles and squeeks at 77,000 kms and my former 2003 X5 built in Germany hasn't anywhere near those issues at the 220,000 kms when I traded it.

I have the same issue with my 2009 X5. Too much noise from the rear area of the vehicle. I was thinking it is from the trunk cover, which has a bar and rolls out like a window shade.

Took mine to the dealer on Tues. and got it back Thursday. For noise/rattles/squeeks, they fixed rear d-pillar trim and replaced both rear seat latches. All OK now and sounds like it's new and just off the line ... we'll see how long it stays tight!

Thought I'd follow-up with you because I know how annoying this problem is. Good luck with yours.

So the German workers would have stuffed felt into there....and removed the other part altogether?

Whatever...

Naw, because my previous 3 bimmers were imported from Germany without these issues, they decided to send Fritz over from the Homeland to do the fix. Thank you Fritz! LOL

Follow-up: Dealer found that upper shock mounts in rear were creaking and removed and reassembled them. All OK now.
