Passenger door lock cylinder rotates... 2001 Z3 3.0i

Another check off the bucket list. I bought my first BMW, a 2001 Z3 3.0i automatic in Topaz blue with black interior and black ragtop. I've always wanted one of these!

It has 59,000 miles. A beautiful car! I live in Western Washington State so I won't be driving it too much from Nov-May due to all our rain, but it will be my car of choice June-Oct.

It has one issue that I'd like feedback on. The passenger door keylock cylinder rotates all the way around. If the cylinder/lock isn't in position 0 (not straight up/down), when I unlock the car with my key fob and open either door, the alarm goes off. Putting the key in the ignition turns the alarm off.

I would like to replace the (broken ???) myself, but removing the airbag is a worry. I have little car maintenance experience. Just oil changes (years ago). But it seems rather straight forward to remove the door panel, airbag, windows etc to get access to the lock cylinder and then replace it.

Any ideas on what exactly is broken? Some cheap retainer clip or something??? The passenger door locks/unlocks just fine with the keyfob or using the key in the driver door. Is removing/reinstalling the airbag a DYI project? Do I have to have a new cylinder lock re-set (or ???) to match the key?

Any help is appreciated.
