7 Series - E65 / E66 (2002 - 2008)
Discussion of BMW's 4th generation E65/E66 7 Series flagship. The E65 generated much controversy, due to its radical styling and iDrive user difficulties. Nonetheless, the E65 broke records to become the best-selling 7-series iteration ever, especially after its 2005 facelift.

I got the notice for the roll-away recall but not the soft-close recall, even though I match the criteria. Hopefully this causes them to send out more notices.

Same here. This is what raised my curiosity.

Uh-oh. It's looking like BMW NA is trying to give me the runaround. The same Resolution Specialist left a voice message at my home with some BS message about my car still not being covered under this recall because the "integration level is correct". I've now placed a phone call to that Resolution Specialist and am waiting for a return call and an explanation.

Try to get a complete workup on your car. Maybe whom ever had it before you ADDED the soft close to it. Its a thread on here(check the DIY section) on looking up your car last 7 of your vin to see what feature came with your specific car.

Thanks for the tip. Just for fun, I went and found this link, http://www.rubmw.ru/vincode/eng/, in the "7 Series DIY" section and entered my VIN and it did confirm that both "soft close doors" and "comfort access" options came equipped on my car.

Update: On 2/21, I received a call from a Customer Relations Specialist in the Easter Division of BMW's executive department and relayed to them the same info. They said they would get back to me upon further review with their engineers. Well, on 3/1 I received a second call from the same specialist to inform me that the recall did in fact apply to my vehicle although not originally on their official list and that they would be reimbursing me for the cost of the repair. I do like happy endings.

You could try pleading your case to your service advisor to see if they can do anything about it.

By the way, the driver's door didn't latch for me this morning which was surprising after having been trouble-free all these weeks. So far it's only happened once. I'll bring this up to my SA when I take my car in next week to address the other recall (12V-504 Rollaway).

Well... A month went by with no incident of the door not latching then one morning it didn't latch. Then it happened again a week later. Has this happened to anyone else that had the software reprogramming for the soft close automatic doors (Recall campaign No. 12V-504)?

I did take my car to the dealer two days ago to address the second recall notice for the rollaway issue and also had them take a second look into this issue. They didn't reproduce the failure and said that if it occurs again in the future that they may recommend replacing the door lock actuator. I seriously doubt that is the culprit.

I'm now having to deal other BMW USA on this for my car as we speak. I called into BMW USA in NJ and got a callback from a Betsy who says she is on the executive team on NJ and she needs me to take it to the nearest dealership which is Roseville and have them run some tests and they will follow up. It started because my son who is 7 was sleeping in the backseat on our drive home from the Bay Area and the rear pass Fodor decided to open at 70 mph!! Lucky my sons arm barely touched the door and that is how it probably opened but damn. Talk about be

Both of my 2008's had this which made me think why the 08's were not included in this recall?

My door latch on the rear driver side needs to be replaced. My car has comfort access and soft close and the door latch is 650 but the latch that has one feature is 325, I'm on a tight budget so I want to know if the cheaper part will work. And also if someone has replaced it themselves, how are the steps. And any other cheaper ways of fixing this.

If the door will not close on the latch , I found this reason .
The soft close comfort access locks have a cam lobe similar to half of yin & yang which pushes on a spring loaded lever preventing the lock from latching , maybe this function is supposed to assist unlocking the door .
The cam lobe jams on the lever preventing closing operation .
This mechanism is on the lower part of the lock assembly .

A 5mm hole can be drilled in the door through which a tool such as a small screwdriver can be inserted to move the cam lobe away from the lever allowing the lock to function correctly .

I would need to make exact measurements but if I recall correctly one can measure 1 inch ( 25mm ) down from the lowest lock mounting bolt and then 1 inch ( 25mm ) away from the rubber seal towards the inside part of the door .

I will add these pics showing the lever in 2 positions but the yellow coloured cam lobe is not acting on the lever in the pics . In operation the cam lobe would move the lever and then move away from the lever . Closing the latch will then move the lever to the cam lobe as in pic 1 .
The threaded hole for the lower lock mounting bolt is to the left of the yellow cam lobe in the pics .
The lever is below the cam lobe in the pics , note the distance the lobe has to travel to contact the lever in one of the pics . Note the lever positions in the pics are relative to the latch position .
The hand is holding the top part of the right front door lock .
Hope it makes sense to you .
Only drill holes if you are truly in need to close the doors and do not penetrate beyond the thin door skin .
