Amazing MPG
So I have my E90 in to get a couple of things done before my warranty is up. They gave me a F30 328i and since my work has taken a week I got to take the loaner on a road trip.
One tank of gas from Denver to Omaha 539 Miles 41.3 MPG with 55 mls left on tank.

Just curious...what driving mode were you in most of the time (Sport, Comfort, or Eco-Pro)? From some of the posts I've read, there might not be a big difference between Comfort and Eco-Pro gas mileage when driving a long road trip with few city/side streets.

THanks, thought so. I very rarely use eco-pro anyway, usually comfort or sport mode.

On my 335 I got 44+ MPG, Ecopro, 55 MPH distance 20 miles in cruise on totally flat hyway. It was a comparison run against my 2010 535,34+MPG same stretch of road and same settings other than no Ecopro. cheers vern

Consumer Reports measured 40mpg for pure highway cruising for the 328i, which I assume they do at 65mph.
But for the OP, there is an added twist. Denver to Omaha is roughly a 4,000ft drop in altitude. I would be curious about the gas mileage for the return trip

for comparison purposes, on the trip computer with my 328xi I notice on my morning work commutes (which is about 80% highway) I typically show about 33-35 mpg but here's the catch, there is about an 1200 foot elevation drop from my home and the office.
On the return drive I usually see mileage, doing the same route, of about 30-32 mpg. I think that at the speeds I drive on the highway at, about 70-75 mph typically, that in straight highway driving with no elevation drop I would probably get return of 36-38 mpg with the 328xi, which is definitely nothing to sneeze at. I had a 328i E90 loaner for two days, and doing the same commute I was averaging about 25 mpg.

Sorry for going on a tangent here, but EPA for the 328i 8-speed is 23/33/26, while the 328ix gets surprisingly a nearly identical rating of 22/33/26. I realize the numbers are rounded off to the nearest integers here, so small differences might have been masked. But I am surprised there is not a bigger difference between RWD and xdrive. I wonder whether BMW has been too optimistic with the EPA estimates for xdrive as they had been with the RWD model when they came up with 36 highway. It could be the other way around too. Any thought on this?

I suspect it's more a case of BMW having had to lower the 328i ratings and being left alone on the 328xi ratings.
The x-drive system weighs about 230 lbs and probably has a very modest effect on power-train efficiency once the car is underway and in cruise. For what it's worth, I have been averaging over 30mpg in mixed driving with my xi and I don't exactly have an egg between my foot and the gas pedal. Similar driving with my chipped A4 6MT would be returning about 24-26 mpg.

Normally comfort although I flip to Eco if I am in stop and go traffic. I like sport mode but it is wasted on my commute most of the time.

Mpg
I have had the 328i Touring Luxury on loan from BMW till my 330D M Sport touring arrives.
It was brand new with NO miles, I have covered 1275 miles in the UK and it has returned 36MPG overall with light use only, mainly highway out of town driving. Any boot down stuff and the MPG drops like stone.

Just a comment and Q on an older thread:
I came from an E93 335 6MT to an F30 328 8AT, and have the twin pipe separation envy a bit. I don't do much freeway driving (where I see the most economy), but i think I diminish my enjoyment by looking at my mpg #'s, to drive it with even marginal zest, I get 15-20 mpg. Using eco pro, the car is totally gutless, with low shift points and meager torque. My corvette used to get 18 mpg around town. . . So I'm wondering, in non-highway driving, does the 335 still return similar mpg, and with more oomph? I was trying to be frugal, and got a great deal on my 328 lease, but if the 335 has more power and still gets the same mpg. . . I know I should just keep it in sport or comfort and not worry about it, but I'm too anal not to look. . . |

Doesn't Eco pro have even less sensitive throttle response than Comfort? This equates to better mpg for passing, lane changes, etc on the highway.

In my N55 X5 I did 23 mpg 70 mph avg coming home from Canada. My 335i is not broken in yet but the N55 gives amazing gas mileage

My car is just about 6000miles and my total avg mpg is 17.1. It was at 16.7 so i must be slowing down a bit. Gotta get it back to 16.7. Beats my 12mpg evo though lol.

Drop in altitude is almost certainly not much of a factor over such a long distance.
I believe typically the winds are out of the west in those areas, though, so you probably got a tailwind which would help. But yeah, having owned primarily sports cars, and 2 M cars in a row, I'd go for the 328 over the 335 in a heartbeat. You gain far more in efficiency than you give up in power. And the 328 is *so* quick.
