I was thinking about this post this week. Think people would be interested in a guide to what carseats fit in what cars? Maybe an extension also of what strollers fit into the trunks of what cars? Seems like a website/guide like this doesn't exist.

Lol! So true. Reminds of years ago when my wife bought a double stroller to take to Disneyland and it took up her whole trunk. Before the trip I ended up buying a new car....lmfao...the double stroller with car payments

Not really car related, but an extension to this idea would be which carseats fit on which planes. Although, the info is hard to find in this case because even the airlines don't know... We called American airlines five different times and got five different answers.

If approved they have a label that says "This restraint is certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft" in red text. Typically they have a base less than 16 inches.

My take has always been it isn't worth the hassle as they are not easy to find ...but that's my 2 cents...

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I know my carseat is approved, the trouble was trying to figure out if it would actually fit in the row on the plane. Eventually, we found the seat back to seat back measurement, but it didn't indicate how thick the seat back was, so we weren't able to calculate if the seat would actually fit... if the seat back was two inches thick, it would work, but if it was three inches, it wouldn't. If there was a database of which seats fit on which planes (by airlines, since configurations vary), that would be amazing.

Wow, learn something every day. I've got a significant amount of freq flyer miles and I've never seen a carseat on an airplane. I didn't even use one when I flew to italy and my son was 1.5 yr old. We just put him on our lap.

Went from a maxi-cosi rear facing Infant -Seat to a Recaro Pro-ride. Rear facing maxi-cosi was in my former QX56 and 550GT. Current Recaro (Proride) fits in my E92 as well as F25 and MINI without problem using latch system. The only problem with the F25 is the latch connector has a tendency to wrinkle the leather - unlike certain other BMW's with dedicated housings for car-seat latch affix points.

We have a 2013 X3 35 M-Sport and a 14 month old. We have had the car for 4 months and have not had any trouble with the car seat. We recently transitioned from our infant seat ( Cybex Aton Infant Seat ) to a toddler seat ( Peg Perigo Primo ) and both seats fit perfectly behind the driver. I am 6ft and have plenty of room ( even a little to move back if needed ) and the seat was professionally installed ( safety first ). On top of that, our daughter loves the seat. We have noticed many of the Graco ( and similar price point products ) are very chunky - you might want to look at the Recaro's and Peg Perigo type seat which compliments our vehicles perfectly.

Lmao! I can relate to that one. I inherited the x3 from my wife when baby number 3 came. I had to sell my bright red and awesome 08 e88 vert to get her a brand new minivan. Painful at the time but I have to admit the minivan is pretty cool in its own way.

I was inspired by this thread to create a website to hold information on what carseats fit and don't fit in cars. I just finished it so there aren't any entries in it (besides mine). But I would love the community's help. If you can take some time and enter in your car and car seat, review on the fit of it... other people will be able to search and make a purchase decision on it.
And please, pass it on to other parents so they can put in their carseat and car. If there's enough interest, I might expand it to strollers in trunks.

Glad to find this thread! We are expecting twins in a couple of months and have an x3 arriving next week. Since motherinlaw will be living with us we'd ideally like to get two car seats that can be installed in the middle and one side, leaving the other side open for MIL. I'm 6"2 and change but my wife is about a foot shorter.

We'd been looking at a graco system but it's sounding like chicco might be a better fit. Can the twins guys chime in again with more details on what you ended up doing?

Also would be ideal if the seats would work in a new M3 - would be a rare occurrence as my wife will be hauling them in the x3 95% of the time but might need to move them to the M now and then in a pinch...

This thread is really helpful...

We are starting this phase in life, we need to sell the sports car and move to a family SUV (x3). I'm glad to see the Chicco Keyfit 30 fits well ... sounds like a perfect solution for infant RF.

Given that this thread is 2 years old ... what did everyone move once the Chicco would no longer fit?

We were a little too excited and already purchased the Diono Radian ... any experience if this will fit RF (with or without the angle adjuster)? We are trying to keep RF as long as possible.

We moved directly from the Keyfit 30 (kept the twins in them till the bitter end) to front facing (don't tell the American Academy of Pediatrics) Recaro Performance Sport seats. I absolutely love them.

+1 We also moved from the Keyfit 30 to the Recaro Performance seats as soon as we could. The Recaro fits great in our E90 front facing but would not fit rear facing. One thing to know is that you are not supposed to put the car seat in the middle and use the LATCH attachments.

Congratulations on the new addition!

Perhaps this was a rookie mistake, but I assumed that any normal baby car seat would fit in the back of the X3 without any issues.

Today, we took our X3 to the BMW dealer where we purchased the vehicle to have the baby car seat installed (it’s one of the services they offer) and were disappointed to learn that to fit our Graco Snugride behind the front passenger seat, the front passenger seat has to slide way forward to the point where an adult passenger would hardly fit (with knees right against the dashboard). Obviously, same issue if we try to install it behind the driver’s seat. We didn’t even attempt to install it in the middle of the X3 (where we initially wanted it for extra safety) because our service advisor indicated that then both the passenger and driver seats would need to be pushed way forward for the baby seat to fit.

So – for now we’re ok because we only have 1 baby on the way. We’ll just slide the front passenger seat way forward, place the baby car seat behind it, and my wife can ride behind my seat when I drive next to the baby (turning our 5-seater into a 2-seater + baby seat). However, if we have a second baby soon (God willing), this strategy won’t work anymore because both baby seats will take up the back seat and the adults will be sqooshed in the front.

Has anyone else encountered/solved this issue (without trading in the X3 for an X5)? I know, I know, should have known better, checked before buying the car, etc…

I'm responding to this without reading what others wrote because I'm mad at you. Don't say this was a rookie mistake at all. I have 2 kids in my X3 and they fit fine and I can squeeze a 5th passenger in the middle of the 2 seats for a short trip 30 miles or less and its not that bad for them especially if they are under 150 lbs. I have the "Cybex Aton" car seat for my 7 month old, and that is behind me the driver. Then my daughter who is 2 years old and 5 months sits in a "Britax Advocate 70 CS", which is behind the passenger seat. We have zero problems with front leg room or comfort. I'm 5' 10' 230 lbs and my wife is 5' 2" 110 lbs. When she drives and I'm in the passenger seat, what I do to make my ride more enjoyable, is I move the base of the seat forward where my knees just barely touch the dash, then I move the back part of the seat all the back till it pushes the car seat, yes a very snug and safe fit. Maybe you should get rid of your car seat immediately and get the Cybex, which is German made mind you. Hope this helps

Britax Roundabout is a great rear facing convertible carseat for a vehicle with a tight backseat. We had my daughter in a Roundabout starting a little under a year when I had my Mini (behind the driver! I'm 5'8). We'll be using the same seat for my son when he's ready to move out of his Keyfit 30.

Evenflo Symphony DLX (RF and now FF) on my X3, and the Evenflo Triumph LX (RF and now FF) on my dad's X3. no issues with respect to length on the outboard seats. We tend to sit upright, and don't have our front seats on ultrarecline, if that makes a difference.
