The C63, M5 , M3, C300, etc., etc., etc. But when I was at the performance center I was able to run down an incompetent boob driving an E60 M5 on the handling course with an X5.

Mein Auto: E60 M5,
Can't tell much difference, all my cars are set to sport settings as is the X. I can just comment on handling in different conditions. Even my 3/4 ton Sub. Has a car like ride, very controlled for a big beast.

i'm glad to see your attempted highjack fell flat.

im going to stick with the 20s and chance it in the weather, i know they will be crap in storms because of how fat the rears are.

but i really like the idea (and look) of the big wheels on the X5. i also have read NOTHING about tire damage because of the smaller sidewall.

and i guess i am just a sucker for aesthetics.

bummed about the e70 coding not showing psi!

I can understand you would rather go for aesthetics than function.. but understand that even with X-drive with the setup you are going for.. you will have a hell of a time if we have a crappy winter in NYC in the next couple of months.

yes totally am aware of that. my f10 with all weathers on 19s was a tank in the snow. i fear as though this set up will actually be worse. but how much better could it be with 19s. i mean, its not THAT much different. right?

Duh, winter tires for.winter, summer tires for warmer weather. 20's in slippery conditions not a good idea, but 19's without winter tires probably not much better.

No hassle involved, my dealer changes and stores all the sets for 5 of our cars. All tires are mounted on dedicatd rims.

My issue is I'd be stuck with winter tires on when it's 70 out, like the temps this week. Doubt the dealer would want to see me for weekly tire/wheel swapouts.

I usually put on winter tires mid Nov. and take them off early April. Accept some days may be less than optimum either way and drive something else.

We had a couple of inches of snow three weeks ago, all seasons just seem to be the best option with the wide range of temps. If the snow gets to the feet level I use the FJ.

Up that. Here in Chicago winters are a mess, it can be 50 one day and 0 the next. The last thing I want is to drive half of the season with the wrong tires b/c weather changes too quickly to keep swapping them. Hence the all seasons.

Also, I wonder how people in California and other mountaneous areas go skiing with summer performance tires - do you bring a set to change half way up the mountain?

Good for you.

Clearly, you really didnt want advice, it is just another 'hey look at me and my car' variant. You ask for advice, get it, blithely ignore it.

Love the syntax, BTW: "coming out of" and "up to snuff".... how can one purport to be driven by needing a 'car like ride', and intimate that they'll spend what it takes to get it up to snuff...then ignore everyone that says 'you'll have a nightmare in snow'?

Saw you a mile away bub.

A

PS To the Q above- I run all seasons on the X5, and the ski-beater MDX. square set up. Mich Latitudes on both. Most folks that ski alot will sway out all seasons for the ski season. Changing 4 tires on the hill is a bit much. (Although I used to carry a floor jack and studded snow tires in an old VW bug when I was ski bumming... Jack the whole back up and swaop tires in the same time it tolk folks to chain up... LONG time ago

i see you all over bimmer fest with your massive amount of posts and your surly attitude. i have been here long enough to have seen your old a$$ coming too. really, thank you for your advice this will be my 6th BMW and i am pretty much immune to the type of negative banter, but im happy to have a throw down on my post with you if you'd like.

and what do you know? a ski bum! is there anything else we can stereotype you with? born and raised in nyc? upper east limo liberal? or bklyn "OG doosh"? i can't decide. but i'm sure you will enlighten us.

notice that i mentioned one thing about snow as a response to another question and comparing to my F10. my specific question was on the potential for bigger rims to dramatically impact bubbles and other damge in the new york winters. i do not plan on driving an X5 in the snow as a general rule and will be happy to give up some performance in bad weather for the god awful look of the 18s and 19s. your wheels suck and it makes your car look stupid. i'm not shopping for a range rover, which is really the standard of actual performance in the snow/nastiness. why would ANYONE buy an X5 for that type of performance? dumb!

the comments on up to snuff and coming out of.. im trying to understand here. are you making fun of my syntax? because nothign of that sentence makes sense.

and if anyone who has read my posts thinks i'm a look at my car kinda guy, then i would be surprised. and anyway. i took everyones advice, even your crusty a$$ nastiness. you like the michilin, roger.

by the way i have a 2012 e92 M3. look at that car. not looking to turn heads in my wife's ride homie

Go with the 20's.... properly inflated all the tires, its a stiffer sportier ride, and mpg's improved from 21.5 to 22.7. Much better look than stock. NYC winters arent all that bad. I spent 10 yrs in buffalo...
