F30 Steering Wheel

Just bought an X1 for my wife. Traded in an old e46.

Took the X1 in for service yesterday and today and got an F30 loaner. Loved the car - of course.

What I didn't like about it is the steering wheel, for two reasons:

1. It's gigantic - it's gotta be several inches wider than the steering wheel in the X1.
2. It's thin - it just doesn't feel right when I'm gripping it.

I'm a huge fan of the steering wheel in the X1 (same as what's in a 1-series, from what I've seen). Good size, good grip, great shape for the 9 & 3 position, but also comfortable when just cruising in the 8 o'clock position.

So my question is - is there some sort of package or option on the F30 that gets it to have a steering wheel more similar to the X1? I was using the configurator and added the cold weather package. Our X1 has it and I thought the heated steering wheel would be the difference. No dice. Same with the M steering wheel - in the pic still looks thin and gigantic.

Thanks for any advice. Maybe I'm picky...but I am almost cringing thinking about that steering wheel. Feel free to call me nuts.

It sounds like you where driving a f30 with no line. When you head back to the dealer check out the stealing wheel on any of the f30 that have a sport luxury or modern line package.

F30 steering wheel

Hi,

You must have been given a stock (no line) F30. That car has the largest steering wheel of the F30 family. All other lines (sport, luxury and modern) get a slightly smaller, slightly thicker steering wheel.

The steering wheel that comes with the M package is the bomb. It's a true sports, nicely padded, thick sports steering wheel--the type you would expect out of a real M car.

I have on order a stock 335i xdrive on order. My first and only mod will be to, at some point, swap the steering wheel with the M steering wheel.

There is some talk in some of the other BMW fora that the F20's M steering wheel is compatible with the F30 (but only if you have an F30 with one of the lines, as it is said that the F20 M steering wheel will be compatible with that F30's airbag module -- the stock, no line F30's airbag module is different than that of the other lines). Unfortunately, it is only a theory, as it does not appear anyone has done and documented the actual swap.

Of course, to swap any steering wheel for the F30's M package steering wheel, you will have to buy the unique, round airbag module.

I had a budget so I did not get the M Package for $3,200. It's an awesome look but I can live without it. (I test drove the car with and without the sport seats and I was perfectly satisfied with the non-sport ones, so that was not an issue for me personally.)

I did not go with the Sport line because it required me to go with the black interior, as you cannot get the beige interior with the Sport line. (Interestingly, you CAN get the beige interior with the M package.)

My car will be AW with beige interior (a combination I love) with what, at least for me, are the essentials: AT, navigation, BMW assist, heated seats, HK audio - (as everyone probably knows, Xenons and other goodies are included on 335s).

Cheers.

Martin-

Ok, you guys can all make fun of me, but I love my F30 no-line steering wheel. Drives just fine, but has a good sound when drumming on the steering wheel :-)

Looking to pick up an F30 sport line, but much prefer the M-sport steering wheel.

If I buy the M wheel, is it a direct swap for the sport line wheel? Will all controls work correctly?

It is hard to tell. If you look at the accessories list for the 328i there is an M performance wheel you can buy, but it is not the same one which is included with the M package. If you can buy it through your dealer, then they should be able to install it. But from what I can see, the specific steering wheel from the M package is not available.

Apparently you need to buy the airbag and buttons too. With labour, comes to around $2500.

Now is it my eyes playing tricks, or is the steering position actually different between no line and the lines? Seems to me like the no line wheel "looks up" (isn't vertical) as much as the sport wheel. Is that true? Or, is it just bigger and seems that way?

I can't make up my mind if I like this wheel or not. It's fine I guess. Could've been a bit thicker.

The f30 m sport steering wheel is very nice. I think it's better than the current M3 wheel.

You can also put in the F20 M Steering wheel without changing the airbag and so on.

It is a great improvement over the "sports" steering wheel that comes standard.

My Sport Line HAS the M Sport steering wheel, which is so nice. My dealer found the vehicle at another dealer in another state.

My understanding is that it came with the M Sport Steering wheel because of a glitch in the ordering process. A BMW screw-up. (I call it a gift!) If the original order is for the "M Sport" and then the order gets changed to a "Sport Line", the M Sport steering wheel stays with the "Sport Line" order for some reason. I did not custom order the vehicle, but this is what my research as shown.

To me I got the best of both worlds. I prefer the seats in the "Sport Line" over the "M Sport", but the "M Sport" steering wheel is just way too cool.

If you are looking to custom order the vehicle, see if you can have your dealer do what I spoke of above.

Currently the only official way to get the M-sport steering wheel is to either order an M-sport 328i or 335i, or a 320i with Sport package. Sadly, it's not a cheap/simple retrofit like it used to be, as the airbags don't match with the other steering wheels.

BMW's M steering wheels are awesome. The one in my E46 is 11 years old now but still has the cushy new feel to it. It feels almost exactly like the M wheel in the F30 in fact. I still get the occasional, "awesome steering wheel" comment from valets, and honestly it's a joy to come home to after trips involving rental cars.
