Exclamation Smoke from Steering Wheel/Shaft area???

2006 BMW 750LI- 122,000 miles, maintained, no mods, just had tires replaced with alignment

Before yesterday I was driving when all of a sudden without any warning the car turns off. I immediately try to turn the car back on but it wouldn’t let me. I decided to safely come to a stop. After that I turn on the car and it starts with some warning sign about the steering wheel, I believe it said 'steertronic deactivated'.

At this point I’m trying to move into a shopping center but my steering wheel was locked or extremely hard to move. After about 30 seconds, a white smoke comes out of the steering shaft area, in between the steering wheel and the dash. With this, a burned rubber or plastic smell came out.

I immediately turn off the car and get out. After a few minutes I go back in and turn on the car and it works fine, steering wheel and everything, except a new message saying my license plate light is out but its not.... I pull it in a shopping center and park the car running but then started smelling that burning plastic smell again. I turn it off and wait a few minutes and turn it on and the smell comes back.

I decided to tow it to the BMW dealer for a diagnose. I told them what happened and they said they will check it out. I get a call today saying they checked the car from top to bottom, checked the turning signals, checked the airbags, checked the car wiring system and ground and every is working properly and in “perfect” condition.

Any food for thoughts???

Something electrical is burning for sure and I am surprised to hear the dealer did not find the cause .
