Audio quality : Bluetooth streaming vs Aux cable

Hey Guys,

I was testing the sound quality on my F30 and found out the sound via aux cable is better that BT streaming. Have anyone observed that? I am using a Beats audio aux cable and I have the default HiFi system (non-HK).

Thanks!

The quality of bluetooth streaming is all over the map. I never use it, because in my own experience it usually doesn't sound good. I'm not sure which protocol BMW uses, meaning it may be that your car's default bitrate for bluetooth streaming is very low. Bluetooth does have the potential for very good sound, but the sad reality is that most devices don't achieve it. Here's an article that lays it out pretty well:

BT a2dp audio is very compressed so that is pretty expected.

a clean AUX port is going to be able to at least support the full audio signal. i mean when you play a CD it is digital, it gets converted to analog with a digital to analog converter chip and when it gets piped into aux the stereo isnt doing anything to it other than playing the audio through an amp. theres nothing wrong with using an analog connection, just you dont get any control over the device since it sonly for output.

if you use bluetooth, most bluetooth system support A2dp through SBC codec. this codec i think has a bitrate of something like 340kbps max but i think is based on mpeg1 audio 2 which is ancient and lossy and is more lossy than newer codecs like say mp3 or aac so it is not the best way to use 340kbps of bandwidth . other newer codecs like say lossless apt-x are better and get to use more BT bandwidth (i have a speaker system that supports this, and some newer phones support it but bmw i'm 99% sure doesnt use it since its pretty new).

anyway so lets say you are playing a 320kbps mp3.

to play it through BT, the mp3 gets decoded by your phone to the SBC encoder. the SBC encoder then reencodes the audio stream with an even less efficient codec. then it gets decoded by the car again. so yeah there is the loss.

i did some research on this since i don't have a2dp in my F30, and wanted to get an after market dongle. they do make apt-x compliant dongles such as that.. http://www.amazon.com/Kinivo-BTC450-.../dp/B009NLTW60

so an apt-x compliant dongle, with an apt-x enabled phone connected to aux would be better audio quality in theory than the built in enhanced BT using the ancient SBC codec. anyway , i hope that helps explain it.

If you have an iPhone, the USB in the console direct to the iPhone will be better still quality wise over the AUX jack.

The USB cable is 5x better sounding than Bluetooth audio.
