Unhappy Steering Rack Replaced at 40K

I started a thread that was titled "tie rods replaced at 40K". Turned out that the real problem was the steering rack. BMW first replaced the tie rod, but that didn't fix it. Then they replaced the lower steering shaft and that wasn't it. Lastly, they found the problem.......the steering rack.

I noticed the problem when the car was turned off. When I turned the steering wheel left & right, I could easily hear a loud clunking sound from the front end......way down low.

I hope my problem was a fluke and not an indicator of a chronic issue.

I've read about others who have had the steering racks replaced in their X3's so unfortunately the fault may not be isolated.

I responded in your other thread... again, this might not solve your problem as others have had this done and the noise comes back.
I bought my car with roughly 4,000 miles on it and this same noise was there. Dealer said to keep an eye on it, but nothing appeared wrong. Next time I go in I'll have them look at the rack, but I hate to replace it if the noise is just going to come back.

I will have BMW replace the rack every week if I have to. There is apparently something wrong with the design or production of the rack. Unless owners press BMW to keep replacing the defect, they won't do anything. BTW.......I noticed excessive tire wear the last few months and BMW initially attributed that to the bad tie rod and that turned into the rack replacement. So keep a close watch on your front tires. Mine were wearing noticeably on the outside edge.

I get a very slight bumping sensation as I cross the concrete curb depression when I back out of my driveway (with the steering wheel turned to the left). Donno if it's related.

That's it. Try turning your wheel when the car is off and see if you get the same noise/sensation.

I just tried turning my wheel when the car is off and in park and it makes the clunking sound. I've only heard it while out driving a couple of times. Would love to know how many other people hear this noise if they were to try it with the car off. If the car is on and in drive and you turn the wheel back and forth, there is no noise at all. Would they know if the steering rack needs replaced just by looking at it? Hate to take it in and have it replaced if it doesn't need to be.

Has anyone else experienced a knocking noise from the front of their x3? Mine is a 2011 and its been making this noise lately, particularly when the wheel is turned to the right and I drive over a bump. It even happens in reverse well. One time it happened while I was driving at a fair speed with the steering wheel straight but go over a couple of bumps.

Also, assuming it is the steering rack, does anyone believe this would be a safety issue or is the noise harmless in nature despite being a bit annoying.

Could it be something within the CV joint?

Not sure. It's a possibility. I does sound like a steering component though based on the closeness of the knock to the steering column itself. It sounds like its right behind the dash and that something has a little too much play in it.

Maybe unrelated but there was a steering recall in 2011 (50 vehicles):

Update on an old thread...

Took the X3 to the dealer on Friday for a few things. My warranty expires (today actually) so I mentioned again the steering rack issue. They kept the car over the weekend and called yesterday saying they were going to replace the steering rack.

I wasnt pushing for a replacement. I really want to know if it's just an annoying sound, or if there's something actually wrong with the rack. As others have said in other forums - after it's replaced the symptom usually returns. I dont want to be on the hook for a new one out of warranty.

On the plus side, my rear brakes were done under maintenance! And I drove an X5 loaner all weekend!

Is this something to be concerned with for those with 2016 X3's?

Maybe. There's more talk on the steering rack on another online X3 forum... Basically, BMW keeps revising the part number (they must make small changes) so there must be something "wrong", right?

Others have had their racks replaced 2, 3 times and the problem comes back. No one has been able to say if the rack's noise is something to be concerned with, or if it's just noise. Mine made the noise from the day I bought it with 3,800 miles. I'm guessing the part number they replaced mine with will be the same that is in your 2016. The question becomes if BMW actually fixed something and got it right this time.

Oh, and it would have been about 4,000 dollars if not under warranty.

I had a 2011 X3 with this similar issue (put on full lock, drive over a "small" bump and it sounds like the wheel is going to drop off). Also, when travelling over rough surfaces it's the same, i.e. it just doesn't sound solid. They replaced the steering rack in 2012 and after a few months it came back. I thought it was just a defective design.

So, imagine my absolute joy when I get a new 2015 model and it does the same, probably worse. It's in for a service in a week or so. I mentioned it as an issue ...

Update: I picked the car up yesterday. I asked if it was something that was an actual mechanical issue with the steering (like one day I'd lose steering all together) or if it was just a noise in the rack. They weren't really sure, but he said "the tech found excessive play in the steering rack". Well, I know you get used to things over time, but the car has made that noise since the day I bought it (3,800 miles then, 45,000 now). I just wonder how long I could have driven with it like this...

So I get in the car and the steering doesnt make the noise then turning the wheel (car off). I pull away and the steering is soooo much tighter. No play in the wheel. No noises. Feels like a new car.

Now I'm thinking... that was a 2,600 dollar part and they had hours of work (maybe 6-8). I dont want to pay for this and I'm glad it was under warranty! Let's hope it doesnt come back. The part number was revised Spring 2015.

my car has been making popping noise when turning left(or reversing when turning wheel left) at low speed especially over bumps or uneven road. was wondering it's related..

edit#2, is there a safety concern if i dont get it replaced? part and labour will probably cost alot.
i didnt know this could be covered under warranty, issue started before my warranty ended, i didnt want to press the issue with the dealer since they are so hard to deal it. i did kinda mention to the serivce advisor and he said that suspension issue isn't cover under warranty.

edit#3, started noticing the issue when car hit 42,000km(26,000miles) now almost 50,000

We have a 2011 X3 and had 5 steering racks replaced!! All under warranty, so we did not have to pay for anything. We love the X3 when it works, the drive is amazing. Had the last one done 2 months ago, so fingers crossed that it will be the last one... will keep you posted..

Same problem here.. just before Christmas the delar replaced my 118d steering rack after countless visits to them insisting that the steering is broken. But now after 3 months I feel the problem starts to come back slowly.. I will need to get back to them to replace it again in the next 4 months before my waranty expires... you all should look into this and go to the delar to replace the rack asap, I think it is a big safety hazard!!

My question is if any of you found an "updated" rack to replace it with? I plan to keep the car and don't want to buy a rack every 3 months!!!
