Purchase: 2011 X3 with 62K miles. Steering noise
At a BMW dealer I found a 1 owner 2011 X3 with the non turbo 6 cylinder engine, with only a few options. It has 62K miles on it and it drove like new, it is priced in the high teens. The only issue is the clacking sound when turning the steering wheel back and forth.
Their tech inspected and suggest replacing the steering rack as a precaution. He said he did not know if there would be any problem long term or not or know exactly what was causing the noise. He said it could go bad in a short time or never cause a problem long term. He basically didn't now exactly what the noise was from or why it was occurring. He was one of their tops techs too BTW.
The used car dept will not pay for a replacement steering rack as it has already passed the State safety inspection requirements. I do like the vehicle and after hearing of the timing chain fiascos on the N20 I'd rather have the N52 N.A. 6. An aftermarket warranty is available, but I'm guessing it would be a few thousand $, then at that point why not pay another $5K and I can get a CPO X3 a few years newer (but I don't want the N20 or turbo 6).
Anyone with the clacking sound just live with it or have you found a solution?
