Enging Knocking

Hey all,
Just joined the forum and was hoping I could get some help. This is my first BMW, CPO 2013 X3 28i 58K miles. I'm learning to live with the exhaust rattle, but the engine knocking has me worried. As I've read on other threads, lifter noise is normal until the car warms up. I live in Phoenix, it's 50F/10C first thing in the morning and boy does she makes noise, feel like I'm driving a diesel some mornings. It quiets down, but never totally goes away. Yesterday for example I drove almost 30 miles and stopped at a drive through on the way home, you can't hear anything in the cabin but once the window is down and I'm in the drive through lane, there's the knocking again. Not holy sh!t my engine is going to blow knocking, just not what I'd expect from a BMW level of knocking noise. Bought it CPO not 2 months ago, brought it back and dealer said this is normal.
Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated!

The knock on the BMW 4 cylinder turbo engine is the noise, no pun intended. Personally, I think the knocking noise is piston slapping, that's why it quite down after the engine warms up and some engine are louder than other due to build tolerance. BMW change the piston design in 2014 and the noise is reduced. For those with the noisy pre 2013, there is really not much you can do about it other than just turn up the radio.

Direct injection is also noisy. The injectors firing sounds similar to a diesel.

If that was the case, the 6 cylinder and the 8 cylinder engines should be noisier than the 4 cylinder since there are more injector, but in fact, they are much quieter.

Then why would the knocking quiet down after warm up? N20 and N55 has pretty much the same compression ratio and if you open both hood, the N55 is quieter.

I agree with the piston slap noise. I have an olds with the same problem. I have over a 120k on it and it runs great. As soon as the engine warms up the noise is gone. However if yours is the only one that is noisy there may be something else going on.

It's a bit hard to speculate what it could be without hearing any noise to compare with the other suggestions in this thread.
Direct injection is noisier on the 4's than they are on the 6's. Could be from the amount of dead time required etc, but the head mechanic at the BMW dealer that i was talking to advised me of this. He said that a heap of people come in with "problems" but all they are hearing is the direct injection.

Maybe you can get a recording for us all to hear? Have you also had someone look at it?

Faulty Turbo Unit

I also just purchased a 2013 X3 28xi - CPO

49,000 miles, Same engine "chatter" as others have noted, worse when cold, "It sounds like a Diesel!"

My CA also stated that this engine noise was common, and due to the "Big/Long Injectors, and it is normal"

So, instead of merely taking his word for it, and given the rapidly approaching 50,000 mile Factory Warranty Expiration - I decided to make a service appointment with a highly respected BMW Service Center about 30 miles away - (i.e. - Not the dealer I purchased the vehicle from)

The Service Advisor called me to inform me that "the Turbo Unit was the culprit," and they even video taped the engine noise and sent it to BMW USA - They agreed, and authorized the replacement!

I will pick up the vehicle on Wednesday and report back!

Is the exhaust rattle related to the engine knocking, you might have some other underlying issues with your engine.

From my understanding, that rattle is typical to this model? It goes away completely once it's warm.

Update:

I picked up my X3

No charge for the over $2,000 replacement of "Noisy Turbo Waste Gate, Replacement of Turbo Charger Assembly"

"Diesel sound/Engine Chatter" is still present....but, hey, I got a New Turbo!! Hopefully this fix will have prevented me a from having a future issue with the Turbo

Brought it back in again, they brought another 2013 X3 28i over and mine was a tad louder, but I guess that's just what they do. Thankfully it'll be hot enough in Phoenix soon and all my driving will be done with the ac on and windows closed and I won't be able to hear it any more....

Between the exhaust rattles and the engine knocking noise, all the 4 cylinder X3 should come with a pair of these:

Odd, as even in cold weather I didn't hear anything like that on the 2013 X3 x28i. Could be my hearing cuts off below that frequency...

This issue is exactly why i joined this forum - two different engine noises.

I just purchased a 2014 X3 28i. There is definitely lifter noise when the car starts that quiets as it warms but does not completely go away. This thread answer the first noise.

My concern is that i hear another "raspy" noise. It seems to start around 35-40 mph. I can hear it start at that mph and if i slow down the raspiness goes away. It sounds like a faint squirrel fan noise. Any ideas?
