What do these do...

More accurately...Why do these interior headlights (yellow outline) not appear to do "anything"? This is my 2012 X5 35d and the halo's (on all four) are a beautiful bright white so the LED's Halos are a LOT nicer and are not what I am asking about. However, the center "driving lights" don't appear to come on...EVER.

Rather, it appears that this truck is coded so that the outside-most lights are on as "driving lights". When I hit the "brites", those same outermost lights once again get brighter. The fog lights below can be on or off but these "centermost" lights NEVER come on...EVER yet there ARE bulbs there. Can anyone shed a bit of light on this puzzling issue? yes, I have tried EVERY switch position inside this vehicle.

I DO have the self-adjusting Bi-Xenon lights that are IDENTICAL to the self-adjusting Bi-Xenon's that were on my 7-series but in stark contrast, the 7 had the center lights as the "driving" lights so I have to ask...What's up? Any guidance is appreciated.

The LCI models I have absolutely zero clue. They just seem to add to the symmetry and space to the headlight housing. I believe the X3 is different? There are no bulbs in the lCI model. The older pre LCI used to have the light for the halos in there.

That being said, you can always MOD!

IE:
first figure out what actually is housed in there. if theres enuff space in the housing, add another stationery HID in that section, then replace the flashers with Some leds.

But again, all Stock is the way to run!

But that's just it, there IS a light bulb in there. Is it possible that BMW uses it for their european vehicles but it is not turned on for the US-marketed vehicles? That was the case with my 3rd gen TL so I have suspicions that it WOULD be possible to activate it easily, no?

I've been wondering myself also. Subscribed to see if anyone have answers.

On my M5 they are used as cornering lights.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who worries/thinks about things like this.

They do nothing; they're just cosmetic... I'm very curious to see what they will be replaced with in the new X5 iteration due in 2014.

I'm pretty sure they are daytime running lights, you may have that option turned off. The also come on if you flash your brights, I think when you pull towards your self?

For the pre-LCI models, this statement might be true. For the LCI models, DRL are the white LED halos and high beams are produced by the outer angel eyes.

A "bright flash" does...nothing either. I believe that these lights actually COULD be utilized as there ARE bulbs in there. I am hopeful that it is simply a coding issue with the US-based units.

Can anyone with a european spec version of this truck (post LCI or whatever) let us know if these lights work on YOUR vehicles on the other side of the pond and if so, WHEN they work?
