Tailpipe Flap

On our X1, we have two silver exhaust tips. One has a flap in it and the other does not. The one with the flap has no carbon inside at all but the one without has carbon. I suppose the flap stays closed till the engine warms up. If so, does the carbon show because the fuel is rich during warm up?

The reason for the exhaust flap being closed is to reduce engine noise at idle speed. (not related to engine temperature)

Mixture is usually rich at startup, the air/fuel mixture control starts only after ~1 minute after starting. I think the carbon deposit comes from pulling some oil through the CCV since the intake manifold vacuum is the highest when idling. Or cold engine oil burning.

Makes sense. I wish BMW had concentrated more on the noises from the little four cylinder in the front. Personally would prefer an louder exhaust and a quieter engine.

The N55 has a flap in the stock muffler, take a look again near the outlet side of the muffler before the tips.
You can remove the vacuum line and open the flap permanently if you want and it will make your cold starts a bit louder.

My 2013 28i sDrive with MSport package has it. The exhaust sounds nice when I get "on it", so I guess it works. ;-)
