Cold Air Intake vs. Air Flow Meter

Hi Guys,

Today a shop mechanic brought up an interesting thought when looking into an intake-related problem I'm having. He mentioned that the older M42 Air Flow Meter (with the flappy door) apparently has issues working correctly with a cold air intake. Is there any truth to this? Anyone suffer from idle issues after swapping out the air box for one? Thanks.

Note: Purpose of thread is not to troubleshoot the problem, just keep on topic with the question. Thanks.

I've never heard of that being a problem, but I've never owned an M42.

I can't speak from personal experience, but I think virtually all people who (for some reason) install CAIs on their M42 BMWs do not experience issues with running as a direct result of the CAI.

the Flap door style MAF has always been plagued with reliability issues from what i've read on various forums, it's entirely possible that the one in question was already on it's way to the junkyard and new lack of restriction just finished it off. But to answer the question directly, no the problems are not directly related to all M42 maf's
