2005-2006 SMG Questions

Hey guys,
I am researching some of the issues regarding the SMG trannies in the E46's for my dad who is in the market for one. He's planning to sell his 2002 330CI and snag a 05 or 06 M3 with the smg. I have read there are some potential pump failures etc with these. Are there any better model years than others or any other suggestions to look for before purchasing?

Thank you,

Brandon

They all seem to be a crap shoot, but newer will just mean less miles on it.

What an immature jerk. SMG may or may not let you down once in 50k miles. If you can't afford to maintain it...don't buy an M3.

Most SMG M3s are just fine.

Hoping that wasn't towards me . I'm simply saying why take a chance when u know exactly what to expect from a fully manual car

Yes, but all I'm saying is if you can't afford to fix it IF it goes wrong...then don't buy one. Some of us (lots of us) happen to like SMG but would go so far as to try and tell others not to buy 6MT. Personal preferences and all that...

Well if I was offensive to the smg drivers I apologise . I just know them to give two of my buddies problems.

That's okay... I know some people do have the occasional problem - but usually only once in the life of the car. There are however many hundreds that aren't having problems. Forums are bad because you only hear about problems - rarely from happy people.

I'm a new owner of a 04 e46 M3 with SMG. I had the car for a month but hardly driven it. Took it to the dealer for diagnosis. Didn't believed them that the pump has failed. So, I took it to the place if purchase to be fixed. I miss it already. :-( I just want to keep driving that damn car. Imagine, it broke down after 4 hrs from the used car dealership... Still awaiting.... I so want my car back. Here is a photoClick image for larger version
