Article re Carbon Fiber Wheels (but not for our six :)

Found an interesting article today on Edmunds Insideline from SEMA 2012. Apparently, an Australian engineering company has cracked the code and successfully manufactured a one-piece carbon fiber wheel (saving about ten pounds of unsprung weight per wheel!). They claim better durability than a forged wheel. At present, they only make one size which fits 911 turbo's, lambo gallardo's and R8's, and they cost $15K a set, so nothing for six owners to be looking at now. However, it is a little exciting that we may be looking at the future of high performance wheels.

Dang it, the admin is truncating the link, so if you want to see the article, then Google "Carbon Revolution Insideline" and it will be the first result.

Nice find! That is some cutting edge stuff. The testing videos on the manufacturer's website were pretty cool also.

yeah - quite impressive. You would think they might try to get some racing teams to use them and prove out their performance/endurance. I also wonder how fast they will sell iin the future and allow the volumes to ramp up and to get the manufacturing costs down to a reasonable price point for high-performance wheels...

There is no way race teams could use these. Teams change tires several times a weekend and the wheels get pretty banged up. I would image the CF lip is delicate and cannot handle the constant abuse of a tire machine that a standard alloy wheel is subjected to.

Also, in any on-track contact the wheel would disintegrate (CF breaks like glass) and would leave the car stranded on the track, where you could limp back to the pits with a bent alloy wheel.
