Google Maps to BMW for ED?

Pick up in 12 days!

Looking to map out my routes on Google Maps so I can reach specific points rather than go from "A to B".

Has anyone plotted out exact routing and sent it to their car gps when arriving in Europe? If so please educate me.

Much obliged!!

What I did was to input the next days destination the night before. After a few times less than a minute to input a new destination. (also an excuse to check up on the new car )
Postal codes are the easiest way.
For Grossglockner and B-500 thru the Black forest, I used "interactive map" (the icon looks like a crosshair), just move it around and when it's over the desired point, simply mash down on the knob. Then tell it to make that point a destination.

Right, but what if you want multiple stops and you want to follow a specific path/road?

Then build intermediate stops into your route in the car. Google maps do not transfer for Europe. Print out your routes and use loading them into your GPS as a learning experience with your new car.

I think the safest way to map out the routes in advance is to use portable navigation with that feature, preset and back-check all routes while you are still in US and take it with you. Once you get to Europe, you simply select the first route and navigation will take you to start of it. Then you just follow the pre-determined route, if you take a wrong turn navigation will automatically bring you back to route so that you can finish it.

I created several routes because I wanted to hit specific Alpine passes and wanted to make sure I'll get there, as opposed to just entering address and most likely going though highway or tunnel and missing all the scenic roads.

I used Garmin and process was not easy and time consuming (we're taking days to create around 5-7 routes, ), because you have to use Garmin software which is nowhere near as user-friendly as Google Maps.

Typically route transfers do not work properly. You can create route in MapQuest and export the file to your navigation, but in process of exporting route will be messed up, because maps in car navigation and maps online are not 100% identical.

"Routes" is pretty advanced feature and I am not even sure if BMW navigation unit supports it. If you simply want to make pre-determined stops and you don't care which route will take you to that stop you don't need "Routes" feature.

I do not believe you can send to your BMW anyway until BMW Assist is activated (which doesn't happen until stateside).

We wanted to go to Merano from Berchtesgaden via the Grossglockner.
Entered the Merano hotel using street address and postal code.
Entered Grossglockner using interactive map.
Once on the Grossglockner at one of photo-stops ended the GG guidance and started the Merano guidance

Thanks guys. Pretty much confirmed what I thought. I will pick multiple points each day and simply add them in manually as I go.

Much obliged!

BMW Assist is not active in Europe ?

Does that affect concierge services or assistance / help calls while you are in Europe ??

The first time I activated Assist was at the Performance Center during redelivery. Both Assist and Sirius are inactive until US delivery, so no concierge and no SOS.

I'm going to use bmw-routes.com and upload via USB. Not sure if it will load without the maps being active, but will give it a go. Worse case I'm loading in a route fresh each day.

So this is a great idea but how do I use the USB for a map I draw up if the USB port will likely be used with the European Map info supplied at The Welt?

Can't say I have any idea since I just learned about this site 5 seconds ago....

BUT.. could we just copy the same info onto the USB stick from the welt with the german maps and read them both off their?

OK this is really a question for someone to hopefully answer before my trip in 2 weeks!

Yeah, I stumbled upon it a few nights ago. I tried to load the routes into my 335d, but I couldn't get the iDrive to prompt me/find the import option. Not sure if it was a formatting thing -- tried exFAT and FAT(16) -- USB key was 1GB in size.

It's possible US-bound BMW iDrives don't have the software to allow for the import of routes (journeys), so it might not work at all. If I do get it to load, I'll report back. Our pickup is in 5 LONG days

Regards,

Anyone know why I keep getting this error:
Route calculation has failed because the content provider is not currently achievable. Please try again later. Your inputs are buffered until you plan a new route or leave the directions.

It was working for a little while... up to about 4 points through the alpinestrasse (sic?) then just wouldn't go anymore. Anyone know how to import a google map into this thing?

For whatever reason the site didn't seem to like more than 6 points in a route. So I just mapped the first 6 then saved it then the last 4 starting from that end point in a second route. Then unzip them both into the same folder and in theory I can load it to my nav if I can add it to the existing stick. The whole folder w/ my 2 routes is only 24kb so I can't imagine it's exactly going to be a space constraint issue.

The delivery specialist at welt mentioned to me that don't push Sos since it's not activated but it might stop the car. Not sure how or why but I leave it alone for now.

For some particular reason the "Import from USB" feature in the BMW Nav has been enabled and disabled several times in the USA-Nav for the last 4 years. Some software updates has it and then it is removed again. I used to have it in a 2010 Nav version, then when I picked up my 2012 via ED it was removed, to never be seen again since.

I even created a thread more than 2 years ago preparing myself for my ED to no avail: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=524411

It did not work.

Nope, no dice in either my 535d or my wife's X1. However, the USB maps provided by the Welt has worked flawlessly thus far. Just arrived in Prague this afternoon.
