first post

Howdy, i've just bought a '97 528i and loving it! it's great to see all the info at b/fest, but a bit disheartening to see the relatively cheap products and parts costs they have over there, but as a few of you say it's not that bad with the net....
hope it's ok to share of my short history of ownership.
i have only had the car about 2 weeks now, got a very good deal although the PO's did give me mistruths.....
bought the car unseen (i know, i know) but the price was good , and answers to my questions were reassuring, and in fact, all in all it is a very very nice car. ebay purchase..!!
ok so the owners had taken off - fair to them they were moving that week, and leaving the car with an uncle and aunt in Brisbane - we are in the northern rivers area of nsw - 2 hours south.
so this was all good and the car was about 5km from our daughters so we arranged to pick it up on a Fri night after work and stay with our daughter that night.
as i had already paid i asked the po's was there anything i should know, any problems at all as we would be picking it up at night etc... it was a done deal after all.
no, no we were told, just the drivers window was sticking a bit as they hadn't been using the car much for some time... (now i know all about bmw window regulators!).
so, no i haven't any bad stories to tell, it all went well i fell in love with this wonderful car and really enjoyed the drive (this after my normal week driving 10-12 hour days in a taxi!!)
so my report that may make you smile.....
1) the next morning, Saturday, looking at the car for the first time in daylight i noticed hazed headlights and faded or overbuffed paint work - -left in the sun too long? BTW it's cosmic black!!
2) i noticed hardly any oil registering - (later that day we went straight to an auto shop where i put in 3 litres! to get it up to the correct mark. but it didn't use any or smoke all the way home -200km any was still at the correct mark last weekend when i changed the oil.
2b) just remembered when i drained the engine i got out 9 litres.....?! put in some 6 or so til the level was right......?
3) the power steering was really low, luckily i brought some with me in our other car (unluckily i read in the handbook later that night that it takes transmission fluid - drained it out next day, Sunday and put a good nulon power steering fluid in.
4) the drivers door window was definitely wrecked what an awful noise when it got half way down... i've ordered a new mechanism and can't wait to put it in
5) not only did both the rear door windows not work, but i couldn't believe my eyes when i checked out under the trims..
6) the right rear actually had wire wrapped around the old broken mechanism to hold the glass up - and that part that holds onto the wire cable - the part that is inherently weak and one can buy that cheap fix for $26 or so (i've ordered that fix as well as rear mechanisms), well that part was severly twisted and warped - i'll get a good pic to post when i replace it
7) the left rear was worse i very nearly fell over laughing when i saw the big plank of wood inside the door holding the glass up, - must get a pic of it too. and this side had the insulation plastic cover missing as well!
i found it all a bit funny though i wonder who had done this, violated this wonderful machine like that, why didn't they just but a Hyundai excel and be done with it?
seriously though i'm looking forward to some very pleasant drives in this quiet smooth and pleasant machine, already planning a week off soon and a big drive to see family after we get the transmission serviced...
hope i didn't go on for too long, happy motoring!!
