One month, one bubble

Washed the car tonight (been a while) and there it was, the front passenger tire has a nice bubble in it. The good news is I bought the wheel and tire insurance. The bad news is that it will need to go into the dealer now.

Interestingly enough, the ride of the car was pretty good - then I realized the dealer had under-filled the tires to the tune of 10psi per wheel. I think it was after I inflated them to spec that the bubble happened (meaning, I hit a pothole after I filled them up). I don't remember any real nasty potholes - then again, the ride is crap since I filled up the tires to 39/42psi.

Is the lesson learned really to slightly underfill the tires?

How bad was the pothole? did it make ya cringe?

I've got my fingers crossed on this whole tire bubble issue .. 1600 mi and counting..

I don't remember hitting a bad pothole - that's the weird thing. I mean I know I hit some potholes, but none were THAT bad!

Not sure about the underfill - that's an interesting idea (but probably not a safe one?).

As for you, looks like you have 19s right? I suspect those are a lot better.

Definitely don't run under inflated low-pro tires. They'll wear uneven much quicker.

I have always ran 40psi on low profile plus size tires on countless tires and it has served me well.

I would hope that on a car that new, the dealer would gladly replace under warranty. I know tires aren't covered but a bubble like that outta nowhere?

Bubbled tires are covered under the wheel and tire protection insurance. One of the biggests complaints regarding the run flats, which also kind of makes purchasing this insurance a no-brainer, is the fact that they are so prone to bubbling...and it doesn't take a pothole to be the cause, I did it in my 135i driving across a ridge in the road. In fact, I'm guessing that's the reason why the OP's dealer under-inflated the tires a bit as a means of "softening" the tires' walls. Anyway, the good news is the OP should get a new tire under this insurance, which helps make the case that purchasing it was money well spent.

Interesting, about the under inflated tires. The 1st cold morning after I got my car the low tire light came on I checked all my tires and they were all at 25 psi. I wonder if dealers do this on the cars with run flats as the one I drove before I ordered mine seems to have been a much smoother ride. I changed to michelin pss at 3500 miles when I noticed my bubble on a front tire. Big improvement.

Goes in on Monday. I'm curious if they will call it a defect or run it through the warranty. I seem to remember the warranty had a limit per year - but maybe that is an aftermarket one.

I just ordered a tire from tire rack as I am taking my Michelins off and putting the run flats back on. I decided to get rid of the grand coupe and go back to an m5. The gc only has 4800 miles on it and the dealer wanted it stock. So if anyone is looking to switch to pilot super sports, let me know as I have 245's for the front and 285's for the rear with only 2000 miles on them.

Doug, "limit per year" as in allowable number of claims? I've never heard of or experienced anything like that with the wheel and tire coverage. Now, the insurance for my daughter's cell phone...that's another story!

Tire and rimms insurance are a must on our cars nowadays...
The roads are getting worse every year... I cringe every time I bring the B7 to Houston and have to take I10 for 200+ miles... Last year, I took a tire piece that blew the fog light assembly on my E60 and you guys know how low the fronst skirt is on the 7 plus, I do not want even think how much an Alpina rimm would cost me...!!!

Believe it or not, I'm positive there was some sort of limit on my past coverage (when it was not done through BMW - I think InTire). Might have been like a lifetime maximum or something.

BTW The dealer wouldn't even consider running this bubble through Dunlop - claimed if I had Tire and Wheel insurance, it would go through that and that I MUST have hit a pothole and probably damaged the rim too (I didn't). Also said that on the 2nd claim, they would always send a rep out to make sure I had not done something to the car (springs/etc) to cause the issues. Finally they said good thing I had 1,300 miles on the car because they often deny claims in the first 100 or so miles saying it came that way.

Then the worst part is, the tool (and I mean that in the person sense) that removed the wheel from my car, damaged the rim. Their impact wrench (or tire iron) chewed up each lugnut area and they did it on almost all five of them. Sigh... seriously? After the first one, how about stopping and getting a new tool you tool?

Anyway, dealer is cool and will fix it - but 1) I shouldn't have been the one to find it and 2) It shouldn't have happened in the first place.
