DPF issues

hello there. I'm driving a 2007 325D with 94500miles on the clock, bought second hand - I drive about 10k miles/year. About 1.5 years ago my DPF warning light came up so I took it to the BMW garage. They charged me £400 for what I understood as a glorified software update - the filter did not need changing. Now the warning light has come up again. I have tried to force a regen by driving >60mph, over 2000 rpms for ~20min but no improvement. When I phoned BMW, they said this is about the mileage to replace the filter for ~£1600...woohoo. Now I have read somewhere that the light automatically comes on after a set mileage but it does not mean that the DPF needs replacing. How do I find out without spending another £400?

Your model's not sold in the United States, but....you might have better luck in this forum.
