Is my battery dying?

I usually drive about 16 miles per day, but when I get home today, the gauge shows "charge battery". So I took the car for a long drive for about another 30 miles half highway, half local. However, when I got home after it, it still shows "charge battery, car will turn off all electric usage" and the car shut down completely after I turned off the engine.

So for the first time, I put the battery maintainer to use (it's the diehard battery maintainer platinum Chris recommended last time). The maintainer shows the battery still has 48%. So far after I plugged in for one hour, it charged to 55%.

But how come after 30 miles driving the battery is not even charged to normal level? Is it time for me to replace it? I hope not since I heard it's pretty expensive.

That looks correct! I had to keep my 2010 750 on the BMW trickle charger ALL the time. Same for my last 3 X5's! The Rolls Royce is a little better, but if I know I am not going to drive it for 3+ days, I MUST put her on the charger. I still do not understand why BMW and BMW related cars have battery issues to this day. Our Mercedes', Range Rovers, Fords, Audis, Porsches....no battery issues!

16 miles a day seems borderline fine. I take that to be 8 miles each way? Your setup is correct. Let it charge to 100% and see how it works for a while without additional charging.

Yeah, 8 miles each way.

Thanks for letting me know. This is the first time it happens to me after 7 months, so I guess it's not so bad.

So now I will just put it on the charger once a week just to check the battery level then.

As a rule of thumb battery maintainers are used on cars that are driven once a week or less. They don't have the amperage to re-charge a battery, simply maintain a healthy battery that's parked for long durations.
AGM batteries can be fussy with age, like early cell phone batteries. They will not take a full charge even if the car is driven 16mi a day.
I tried this on my 5 yr old Odyssey AGM battery and if worked.
Fully drain and recharge with a real battery charger that 30amps or grater. This was suggested to me by an engineer who works of Odyssey. Her explanation was under cretin conditions, such as short high amperage charge, then plugging it to the maintainer will sulfate the battery over time.
I drained and charged it twice, so far so good, saved me from buying a new battery.

Btw, I do not know anything about the Diehard Platinum Battery charger you are using. I have a factory BMW Battery charger. I've used it for the last 4-5 BMWs. It works great, and is so small and easy to use! It's funny, the Rolls Royce (like the Bentley) have their own styled battery charger. The Bentley comes included, and is AWESOME. There is a totally hidden magnetic "plug" under the lip, where the rear license plate light is. You do not need to open the hood, the trunk, have the car unlocked, locked, etc, etc. You just snap the magnetic plug under the rear of the car (outside) and plug the charger in the socket. So easy. Ingenious!!

The Rolls Royce is in the trunk, under the thick and heavy wool carpet and under a big cap you need to unscrew. It is not included with the car, and it is about $775.00!!! I asked my dealer if I could just use the BMW charger under the hood, and at first they told me No. I looked under the RR hood, and there is the EXACT same red + battery terminal, and the same bolt (black -) as the 7 Series. I mean the SAME! I told them I have been using the BMW charger, and it works beautifully. They told me they checked with Rolls Royce, and YES, the BMW charger is 100% fine, and even factory approved. They just wanted another like $800 bucks. Crazy! :-o

I've yet to use a charger. When I'm traveling I sometimes don't drive the car for a month and have yet to receive a charging warning. I also use the Acc mode heavily, esp watching TV and listening to web radios.

I drive 5 miles a day, however every Saturday I charge my car using BMW charger overnight. No issues.

Well, I guess my battery is really dying. Fully charging it only takes 1 hour which took at least 7 hours before on a battery maintainer.

Moreover, everytime I start the car after parked for 30 mins, it will show " increased battery discharge ", and I will even have to reset my time/date too!

Driving a lot doesn't really help charging as well, the car told me to charge battery right after 40 miles drive last night.

Now I have to charge it every night just to make sure I can start it the next morning to go to work. Guess I have to do this until next Monday I can take my car to the dealer.

Anyone knows how much it would run me for the battery?

Ohh, my right side rear airshock is leaking too, the tire will tuck in all the way after parked for over 8 hours. Luckily this should cover under warranty.

You should have the dealer test the battery and charging system, something must be draining it or the alternator is not delivering enough current. I thought the battery was covered under factory warranty.

As a note, the AGM battery on my old E65 is more than 6 years and it still cranks even though it sits as long as three weeks sometimes.

Yeah, I just told the SA about increased battery discharge instead of concern of the battery so he can have the car checked first before replacing the battery.

Let me know what the diagnostic is. In less than 4 years, my car is on its 3rd battery, which already is failing. I'd better get a new one before the warranty expires.

With my Porsche 911, there is a simple battery trickle charger that charges through the cigarette lighter - simple, neat and effective. I have a 2011 750LIx. I have had it for 30 months and only have 5,000 miles on it (sounds stupid, I know, but my greyhounds have me using my FJ Cruiser and not the black leather monster). I will check with BMW about a simple battery trickle charger for the 750 - does anybody know the part number and cost?????

My concerns is that I also get all the strange "battery drained" messages when I drive the BMW - usually only once per week but there have been full months I have left it "napping" (stupid on my part).

Additionally, I have Dinan stage 2 Turbo upgrade, but the car is not nearly as fast as when I got the Dinan. I now have a suspicion that because my battery keeps "draining" it may have started to shut down components as the battery charge declined.....and maybe wiped out my ECU flash from Dinan? that sucks.

any help on the BMW trickle charger is appreciated. Maybe I use that, get my ECU re-flashed to Dinan 2 and all is good? Unfortunately, my Dinan guy is 3 hours away in Charleston, SC, but I want to get it right (BTW - Charleston is a great drive/trip in my M Sport so I really don't mind getting a re-load and a few nice dinners).

I am not techical. any help is appreciated. kt

I'm currently experiencing the same issue on my 09 750i. My SA told me that it's most likely just that the battery needs to be charged. There's less than a year left on the original warranty and I'm gonna push to have a new one installed prior to that expiring. This would be the first replacement.

Just go to the parts counter at your dealer. There is only one charger. You need the one with gator clips. I paid about $70, after my BMWCCA discount.

A similar charger is available at Sears, I bought mine for 35.99. Does the same thing and more compact.

SA called me back today, they have to special order my battery since it's after the holidays, and my rear shock is bad so they would replace that too. All free of charge.

You guys have the same problem as mine, should push the dealer to change it before the warranty expires, $600 for a battery sounds stupid.

Funny they told me my rear tires are recommended to be replaced, and want to give me a price quote! I told them never mind since this is the perfect timing for me to finally go non runflat!

Got my car back today, ordered Michelin pilot sport ASplus through my buddy, scheduled to get them changed next week.
Anyway, car is finally back to normal, new battery, new rear air shock, but they still can't figure out the rough idle, my sales told me I need to floor it at least once a week to clean up my fuel and exhaust system, hah!
He is also giving quotes on x5m and the m5. 1200 a month lease with 3500 down seems a little high, how do you guys think?

I have been getting the same “charge battery” message the last week or two. It’s a 2012 Li with a little over 4k on it. I got it in April, but come on, the car should still start.

I'm sure the dealer is going to tell me to put a charger on it. So what is the recommended charger of choice? I don't really need one that say's BMW on it.

I received my car back last week but I'm still receiving the battery heavily discharged message. They charged the battery but the message came back a few days later. They are going to replace the battery this time which should hopefully fix the issue, 9 months before factory warranty expires!
