Touring Roof Speaker removal

does anyone here have any info on how to remove the roof speakers in the wagon?
my new bsws came today, and I want to install them, but there are no instructions for the wagon. Looks pretty simple, but Id like to make sure before I start this process. Thanks!

Hi,

I'm quite sure that you'd need to drop the headliner somewhat to gain access. The 'covers' you can see are indeed just that, covers and to get to the speaker itself you need more space/access. That said, I think it's a complete waste of time replacing the speakers in that location - they fire straight down to the boot/load space floor. With the upgraded sound quality of the BSW's (didn't know they did E39 touring roof speakers) perhaps that will help them sound better in that location. For me, I created custom pods to fit on the D pillar cover to project the sound forwards into the cabin. Pictures;

They're 4 inch co-axial DLS speakers and I only run them for a 'little' rear fill as I do prefer 'some' music detail from the rear. I'd say perhaps 10-15% of the level of my front is what I run the rear's at.

Excuse the slightly lose oem cover, my replacement oem Sport black headliner is in the garage!

Cheers, Dennis!

My rears don't work, thus the replacements. I hope I don't have to drop the headliner. I just cant seem to find instructions anywhere, not even on BSWs site. well, no need to
remove the headliner, they popped off with some effort. easy swap.

I know you edited your post to tell us they just popped off. But if memory serves me correct...I think I removed the covers once and it was sort of easy...by uncurling a paper clip to use as a "hook". I inserted it thru one of the holes in the speaker cover and pulled...I did this several times around the circumference of the cover...and this gave access to the screws that hold the speakers to the roof.

If this wasn't on the e39 Touring...perhaps it was on my old e34 Touring? Anyway...that is the memory that seems to be sitting on the edge of my memory.

EDIT: instructions (click link) & pics from BMW TIS (http://tis.spaghetticoder.org/s/view.pl?1/05/73/87)
