A common issue with 540i is that the wires in the trunk harness wear out. You need to cut open the harness to see it. Supposedly simple fix. It is locked in the trunk, on the left side, right at the trunk hinge.

One of my back up lights and a license plate lights are out. Also the trunk no longer locks with the central locking system. I haven't gotten the time to open the harness to do the fix, but will soon.

i didnt realize my reverse light was out until i ordered LED bulbs to replace them cause i thought the stock bulbs wasnt bright enough only to find out they never worked. haha did the search and read about the wires breaking/cracking in the trunk. checked it and there was about 6 wires that needed to be fixed, really thought that would fix my reverse problem but it didn't. #12 fuse in the front box was still good as well. so i'm guessing for me its actually the switch that went bad..... but i heard its not a cheap fix. debating if i should spend the money to get it fixed.

if its a manual then it is on side of the gearbox itself. if its an automatic, it is part of the shifter lever, you will need to remove the floor plate in the center console

back up lights out

Thanks, will look for it there. As for the switch being costly, it can be bought on ebay for about $10, so the only problem with the fix should be finding it

back up lights out.

From what I gather, the switch is located under the shifter console IN the car if you have an automatic, if you have a manual then it is on the tranny

Its called a gear selector switch/safety neutral switch on automatics. It could possibly be called something similar on manuals but im not sure. Check on rock auto.com Thats the cool thing about rockauto is you can look up the part. and if its in stock they will have a picture of it. You might want to try a junkyard. Brand new I think they run about $100. But I just got one for my automatic this weekend and it took me about 10 5 series to find a descent switch. good luck.

No it will not be the same switch. Heres a pic attached. The switch is the black thing to the right. I thought somebody said it was under the floor board on a manual?? I dunno though..

manual can only be acessed from under the car. it is on the side of the gearbox toward the back, cant remember if it is the left or the right side, its been a while, but should be pretty obvious, its circle shaped, approx the size of whatever your smallest coin is called in USA. Not cross compatible between manual/auto tho.

i think the correct terminology in the BMW system is back up light switch.

plug your chassis number into realoem and find it in the parts lists that come up, will be there somewhere.

back up light out.

Spent a while last night checking out the wiring diagram and if I am right a good way to check if the problem is the tranny switch, is put the car in reverse and if the passenger mirrow tips down ( as it should ) the problem has to be in the wiring at the back in the trunk ( blue/yellow wire in the harness).. The reason I say this is when the car is in reverse a signal is sent to the mirror and the reverse lights by the switch, so if the mirror gets the signal and the lights does not, the problem cannot be the switch as that signal ( power) is carried from the switch by the same wire before splitting up . Anyway my logic :o).

Sounds reasonable as long as your mirror has that function (which I think yours does). Also, my E38 had it and there was a button that had to be in a certain position to activate the function. I can't remember where the switch was, but if you have it, make sure that the switch is in the correct position to ensure that your testing method is accurate.

back up lights

Found out why my back up lights did not work. I am ashamed to have to say this but after I chased every possible cause from the tranny to the bulbs I found BOTH bulbs were caput. I must have been working on one for some time and only when the second went out did I notice I had a problem. Anyway I now have both lights working again and have learned a lot about how that system works, also learned when a light goes out check the bulb first dummy :o). Thanks everybody, thanks to you all I am now a more informed idiot !!!
