OK, I made a mistake......

I had the dealer install license plates on the front of my 328i. I wish I hadn't done that.

Now I'm debating whether or not to use one of the BMW 3D logo plates in the front instead of the regular license plate.

If I do this should I get the silver 3D plate or the black matte 3D plate? My car is Mineral White Metallic with Dakota Beige interior.

Kind of leaning toward black matte.

I've attached both below.

What do you all think?

If you're really that unhappy, I'm sure a local BMW shop can fill those holes and paint them over for a nominal fee.

I'm not THAT unhappy. Just looking for something a bit nicer than the actual license plate.

Any opinion on black vs. silver?

Not a fan of the logo plates. Personally, I would have a body shop patch the holes, but if you don't want to go to the trouble, how about these match-painted plugs?

+1 on plugs. Since you had the plate holder installed and IL requires front plates to me it only makes sense to display the correct license plate.

Are you sure about that? The Illinois dealer asked me specifically if I wanted the front plates on. I just read where the front plate requirement is no longer in effect in Illinois as of January, 2011.

The FAQ section of the Illinois Secretary of State website indicates a front license plate is required, as do three answers posted by Illinois attorneys responding to a question posted on Yahoo in June 2012.

Yup. You're right.

It's a moot point now.

Thanks!

Logo plate looks tacky. Just stick your regular plate on there!

why did you ask the dealer to drill the bumper? IL is a two plate state but many dealers give you the option. Plenty of cars run without a front plate, I do and ive never had a problem.

From a NJ standpoint, any chance I can get away with no front plate or is it a certainty that I'd get nailed?

I am also in IL - Chicago area. My front plate and bracket are in my trunk. Dealer gave me the option and I chose not to install. 6 months and 6000 miles (half on toll roads) and no issues. I am aware that it is a requirement in IL to have the plate installed and also understand that if I parked at O'Hare international airport without a front-plate I would absolutely receive a ticket which I believe it $60.00 (so I don't take this car to O'Hare)

My plan is to leave the plate off. The risk is that if I am stopped for another reason, then I would likely receive a ticket for no front plate also. At this point I am willing to take the risk.

I've been driving my M3 for almost 6 years with no front plate. When I got the 335i I was just going to let the dealer drill the holes and not be subject to being pulled over and/or ticketed.

When they drove out the car after it being detailed, no holes drilled. I asked the CA and she said they don't do it as most customers don't want it.

So back to no front plate. It sure does look better that way though.

As an aside, when pulled over somebody on the Forums told the cop that he just had the bumper replaced and painted--hence no holes or front plate. It's worth a shot.

MD is also a two plate state. So far, I've passed cops and no problems(knock on wood) I have my plate in the trunk, though.

You be the judge. For 11 years I ran without a front plate. Two years ago I got stopped by the police in the town next to where I live and I talked my way out of the ticket,BE POLITE. Three weeks later I got stopped two towns away from me. I tried to talk my way out of the violation and the cop said thats funny my computer said you were stopped three weeks ago for the same violation. Any way I talked my way out of that one too. Don't beg but BE POLITE When I got home I put on the bracket and plate. With the F30 I left the plate off again and see what happens. You be the Judge.
cheers

Well hells bells. I'm glad we put one on the front even though the dealer suggested we didn't need it in Il anymore.

Here in CA we are required to have front and rear plates. I thought long and hard about this as my dealer gave me the option of not drilling the front bumper. I initially asked that it not be drilled only to change my mind and have it drilled after all. I decided I wan't going to give the law a cheap reason to pull me over or give me a ticket. I like the look of the wider european plate on the front bumper like I had during ED. Now, without the plate the look is kind of bare. I don't particularly care for the look of the US sized plate but it doesn't make that much of a difference to me. So, the plate is on and I'm not worrying about it.

I'm not sure how many other states are the same, but here in UT it is a 2 plate law but only as a secondary offense. So you can't be pulled you over only because of a missing front plate. For now I'm going to take the risk =p

I 100% agree. The matched painted plugs look perfect. Unless you knew the car wasn't suposed to have them, no one would ever know.

BJ -

I always thought the same till about 2 years ago, then I took the front plate off of my Acura. I haven't been stopped once or asked about it. I know its hard to do sometimes, especially because some cops (not all) can be complete DICKS, but I agree with Vern, just be polite, tell good stories, and you'll be good!!!
