Longer iPod Y cable?

I've got my iPhone in the center console but I need it to be viewable while driving since I use it for my nav (TomTom is a great app) and selecting my tunes - jailbroken with NoAccessorySplash so I can use the iPod interface. Problem is that the BMW cable is much too short for that. I tried getting another cable with USB and 3.5mm jack but the car doesn't recognize the device as an iPod; it only sees an AUX input. Sure, I can play music this way but there's no head unit control. Additionally, the cable doesn't charge the phone.

I've thought about going old skool and just buying USB and 3.5 mm extensions but before I do that, is there a longer cable out there that works with the HU to look like an iPod is plugged in rather than having to resort to using the AUX input?

Use the cable that came with your iPhone. You don't need the Y Cable. Actually, using the stock iPhone cable works better than the POS Y-cable.

Enjoy.

No long Y cable I'm aware of. Can get USB & plug connection extensions; wire tie them. Closing the armrest may be a problem with any cable.

Now remembering Best Buy has iPhone mounts, maybe docks. A number of car audio units w/cable iPhone input cables. Check it out!

If you must have a Y cable, best buy has them and they will charge your phone. They are in the audio section not the phone or mp3 player section of the store. I made the mistake of thinking I needed this when I bought my car. I found out that the single USB cable will do audio and video and since I have Nav I just leave my iPod in the center console for music.

I already have a longer Y cable but the iPhone does not show up as "iPod" in the audio sources when I use it. Meaning, no HU control. Honestly, I don't even necessarily want to have the iPhone out of the console, I just want to not have to crane my neck so much when operating the thing.

Just get the USB and 3.5 Audio Male-Female extension cables.

Simple iPod cable will not work with pre-CIC cars... You NEED the BMW Y-Cable.

If you need a 30 pin iphone/ipod extender, try this site. Lots of the folks with the Audi MMI use their dock extender. Good luck!

Do you have the Combox controller/iDrive? You should certainly have audio if so. What year/month build is your car?

You don't even have to have that. I have a 2008 and I have never needed the 3.5mm. Just a standard USB to ipod because output is digital.

That's what one would think but on non iDrive systems the audio comes out of the aux jack. Believe me I've tried without it.

BMW iPad Y extension

I noticed that the solution to Torifile question was never solved. Has anyone found a simple extension cable for the BMW y cable. The glove USB and direct aux jack combo is a nuisance . Tks

I use a 3 foot 30-pin M/F extension cable that I picked up off ebay quite a while back to use with a different vehicle before buying my BMW. Works fine with my neXplug aftermarket BMW iDrive Y cable.

I'd expect one of the dock extenders from CableJive above to work just fine, just make sure it passes audio/power/sync/etc.

Not sure what you mean by glove box USB though, I'm using the USB next to the AUX jack in the center armrest.

y extension

thanks gbp-I find using the short BMW Y cable is awkward and blanks out the ipad screen with " accessory attached", so the only control of the audio has to be done on the BMW screen, OK for music maybe but difficult for audiobooks. Also on mine the USB in arm rest also does not charge. does your system do this?
Using the USB which is in the glove compartment allows for iPad charging and then using aux jack in arm rest, lets the ipad screen stay active. Maybe I'll stick with this.

Kingsburg - I missed somewhere that you were using an ipad. I've never used my ipad in the car, just my iphone, and I prefer to use the iDrive controls to select music rather than trying to see my phone screen in traffic. I know the ipad wants a higher charging current than an iphone, so that could be the reason for it not charging from that port.
