Hey Markie,
Does the vehicle crank but just won't start? About two weeks ago on my 2007 X3 (111,000 miles) I had the problem where it would crank but just wouldn't start. I tried jumping it, but that didn't help either. I had it towed to the nearest BMW dealer, 90 miles away. They determined it was a bad fuel pump. Once it was replaced, I was good. If I had've known that it was the fuel pump, I could've replaced it myself for around $300.00. But since I had no clue if it was the fuel pump, a sensor, or several other random things, I really didn't have a choice but to tow it in. The final cost for the pump and labor was $820.00. |

![]() So what I get is that you turn the key and nothing happens, but you have power? My two guesses are starter or battery. Hope this helps.

I will add 1 more less likely guess - the immobilizer.
Try the other key in case that one has suddenly lost its chip coding. But could also be the system (EWS) that reads the key and communicates with the computer to signal that the starter (and fuel pump, etc.) can be energized. However, starter motor is the prime suspect - failures in later model X3's are not unheard of. These are the 3 things that will prevent a jump start from working, although for the battery to be the culprit it would have to have suddenly developed a complete internal breakdown. |

There is one other possibility. I had the problem on an intermittent basis where everything would power up, but the starter would not turn. I was fairly sure it was the immobilizer, but in fact it was the ignition switch.

Markie seems to have disappeared as quickly as he came.
Very hard to help people when they don't give you much to go on and don't let you know if and how it got resolved. |

Interesting... my 07's battery died five years on the spot! Seems like a trend...

I have an 05 3.0i. Mine had the same exact symptoms as you describe. Wife started it, then it instantly sputtered and died. Wouldn't start for a week. I checked the fuel pump, pressure, crank sensor etc. it was only flooded! 4 plugs were soaked. Dried them off and it started right up. My only concern is figuring out how it flooded. Anyway it drives fine now.
