Z3: Hard top install kit parts?

Do I really need to buy a $500 kit to install the hard top?

I have a defrost switch and the brackets for the front of the top, I guess all I need are the two rear bracket posts type things.

Left hardtop support 1 54218410457 $101.96
Right hardtop support 1 54218410458 $101.96

Can I get by with just buying these two supports?

What else do I need to get the top installed? I have read all the posts I can find, but I don't see a need to buy a $500 kit if I don't absolutely need it.

You only need the rear brackets and front torx bolts. I didn't bother with the defroster or the trim pieces that cover the rear brackets.

Thats good news for me then. I have the front torx bolts already, and the defroster wiring is in there, as is the defroster switch. I thought it looked better than the blank plate and I had extras.

So.... I just need the two rear support brackets and I will be in business.

Too bad its a green top, but it was too good a deal to pass up.

Also got a car cover, a spare Z3 Bentley Manual, and an oil light reset tool if anyone wants one.

Removable top - Top and components - Lock bracket $11.90
Removable top - Top and components - Support bracket $86.06
Removable top - Top and components - Support bracket $86.06
BOLT $2.00 $1.60 $0.00 $6.40
Removable top - Top and components - Trim cover Trim cover Left $4.43
Removable top - Top and components - Trim cover Trim cover Right $4.43

So I should be able to get the top on for around 200 bones if I just ignore the foam trim pieces that go around the hard top supports.

Where is the defrost wire (that goes to the hard top support) hidden? Can I get to it without disassembling the rear bulkhead?

The defrost switch is already installed, so thats not even a concern.

Does the car have a power top? If so, the socket for the defroster wiring harness is buried inside the foam on the driver's side. It will mate to the harness via a three prong socket (red). The harness then connects to the support via the two flat contacts (yellow).

Also make sure you have the red relay

I had a similar deal with my top. It's green (drunkelgrun), but the price was too good to pass up. I just need to get off my ass and find a painter.

I guess that no one wants a green top. I think mine is boston green. Not sure to be honest.

I bet I could make that harness if I really wanted to. Unless its super cheap. Gotta find the part number. Its not listed in the ETK for the hard top.

These are the part numbers off my Tisher invoice:

54218410457 Front Left 1996 - 2002 1 $81.57 $81.57
54218410458 Front Right 1996 - 2002 1 $81.57 $81.57
61108400220 TUBING 1 $14.66 $14.66
07119901586 BOLT 4 $1.53 $6.12

The "tubing" is the electrical connector marked up with yellow and red in Kelvin's post above.

If you don't already have the hook wrench for adjusting the rear mounting points, it might not be a terrible idea to pick one up. I also bought the "alignment gauges", but I don't know that those were worth the trouble.

Yeah, I have everything except the mounting points and the trim pieces that go over it in the rear and the front.

And I can order those later on if I feel the need. But it doesn't seem to affect the performance of the top.

yeah, anyone got a part number on that relay?

The one I have for the fogs says 0 332 019 456.

It looks the same. I have several spare relays, but they are the light green ones.

I am doing a new harness etc for the front and rear fogs as well as the HID headlight ballasts.

Relay part number is 61361378238. If the power socket is in your car, the relay most likely is already there

Socket is there, but the relay is not there.

Thanks for the part number.

I am going through the mess and just making sure I have everything I need.

I have everything on the order but the foam trim pieces. Not sure what the point of those are.

I think I will just pull the existing harness and add new pins to it, to eliminate the additional harness. Seems like a pointless add to me. Just something to rattle.

Are you talking about these? You're supposed to remove them from your car so you can install the brackets. Interesting that the relay is not there. Did your car spend any part of its life in Canada? I've heard the DRL module can be plugged in there

The socket for the relay is there, just no relay.

I removed those foam pieces, I think there are foam pieces that go around the hard top mounting posts, and there are caps too.

But they are about 200 bucks for those trim pieces.

There are molded plastic trim covers that cover the rear mounting brackets. They are each attached via a single hex bolt. No real functionality except to give the bracket a finished look when the hardtop is not in use

Not sure where you're getting $250 unless you're referring to the price differential between buying the bare bones hardware piecemeal and the cost of the entire retrofit kit. Those trim covers are parts 54218410552 and 54218410551 and are $65 each at Tischer. They come up on ebay now and then for less

Congrats! Should be a much quieter ride home - I guess you're picking it up in the Z as opposed to your truck? Post some pics when you get back.

New install about to be done.

I've just bought a used top and ordered the install kit from Tischer. I've read up on whatever I can about doing the install, so I think I'm ready.

I do have a power top so I'm hoping that this will be an easier install than the manual install. But if anyone has any suggestions or advice before i start, it would be appreciated.

Thanks,
