tint

Does anyone have recommendations for good tint shops in orange county?

Since our back windows are factory tinted, if I wanted to have uniform tinting across all 5 windows, would I apply lighter tint in the back 3 + darker tint in the front 2 (since they are not tinted)
I wasn't sure if the back ones are able to be removed completely or if they are manufactured that way.

Be careful with the tinting in CA -- there are some pretty draconian rules about the percentage that the CHP enforces with alacrity! Things that used to be kind of sloughed off (front plates, window tints, etc.) are now seen as a source of revenue for our bankrupt state and pounced on.

yeah I know, cops out here are picky about stuff like this. I was just going to tint it pretty minimally. But I didn't know how to make it uniform since the rear 3 are factory tinted. What tint percentage is medium light?

I used Mikes Tint Shop years ago and their work really held up. I had that car 9 years and never had an issue with the tint. I think they are still around.

I do not live in CA but I used 30% in the front on my 2013 and it matches much better than the 35% I used on my 2010. Not sure what the CA law is though.

Ktono, you just tint the front two windows 30% to match the rear windows? And you did not tint your rear windows?

Correct, I just tinted the fronts 30% and they look very good and match really well.

CA permits up to 30%, but this includes the factory applied tint- so "BMW Factory" + "whatever you add" must be 30% or less.

Am I reading that correctly? 70% for CA. I thought higher the %, the lighter?

Yes, sorry... It is 70 "transmittance" or 30% darkness... So not very much at all.


Most cars you see in ca that look tinted are, in fact, illegal

Never thought about tinting until I got a (carbon) black x5. So I got the ferric gray summer wheels and blacked out grille thing going. Why not tint. Maine allows 50% which might look cool. But here is the question: is it reversible with no downside evidence of removal if I don't like it?

30% is a nice medium tint and about as dark as you would want to go in the rear as well if you drive much at night.

Any decent tint shop will have a light meter to ensure that your factory tint + aftermarket film meets legal limits.
