Considering a 95 318ti that doesn't stay running
Local guy is selling a 95 318ti hatch.
Says it was a daily driver and then parked for a few months. Now starts but dies. He says his mechanic thinks its the cap and rotary distributor or maybe spark plugs. Being unfamiliar with these cars, does that sound right? Do these cars have OBD in them? I could bring a OBD scanner along and test that if it would help. Also, given that I am 6'9", do I stand any chance of fitting in this thing? Thanks! |

Sounds like a fuel delivery problem. They do have obd. 2 different types tho.

Easy fix or hard to diagnose? Thinking of this as a project car... Seller is asking only $500 for it.

95 is obd1, so no obd2 scan tool will work. you can do the stomp test, though, for codes.
being 6'9" is a bit tall, so you may feel cramped. check in with chad (e36phantom) for fitment. ymmv. sounds like a fuel issue, but for 500 it's a deal if you have the room and time to work on it. and there are not any distributors on the m4x motors. df

'fraid I don't know what the "Stomp" test is.

Any other gotchas to look for on a 95 318 hatch?

I had a 95 ti Club Sport...fun cars. I'm 6' 3" and fit just fine, even with a helmet on, you'll be OK. Never any engine problems other than the idler pulleys.

the stickies at the top of the forum cover a lot of what you should be looking for in a used bmw, but since it's cheap enogh and not running, you already know it has 'issues'...
with that being said, a stomp test is for pre-96my vehicles (non obd2) for the north american market. key on, engine off, depress the accelerator to the flooor 5x very quickly and count the flashes from the check engine light. there are a series of flashes that correspond to a 4 digit code. df
