Vanos or no vanos

I own a 2001 E39 525i w/M54 engine. Does this engine have Vanos ?

Yes, both intake and exhaust. Why do you ask?

I didn't know if my car has vanos and I understand they require maintenance from time to time.
Do you know what the maintenance and schedule is ?
I ask because I have a fuel trim issue (P1192) and cel.

Post-cat fuel trim might be fixed by changing the post-cat O2 sensor. This code is for the front three cylinders. Perhaps someone else can step up with a more definitive answer.

The VANOS has no affect on fuel trim. The VANOS seals must be replaced to restore original performance. This must be the maintenance to which you refer. If the seals are replaced with Beisan seals, they won't need replacement for a long time, if ever.

Edjack post cat O2 already changed, didn't help light came on in 15 miles. Pre cat O2 changed to no avail. Told my issue is a fuel trim issue due to a vacuum leak somewhere.

On the Vanos question--If you Diy you should check out the Besian System website and read the diy there and the reasons for doing this work--this will bging your car back to life. On the fuel trim issue--use the search engine at the top of the page and type in Vacuum leaks revisited--that will give you all the spots we know of to search and destroy Vacuum leaks--Hope that helps

My long term fuel trim was a little over 15% until I cleaned my MAF thoroughly. CEL was on. Afterwards, the CEL turned off and my Long Term Fuel Trim is now about 7% on both sides. I'm pretty sure you have a MAF but I don't know.

Maybe my scanner can't read long term fuel trim because its always 0. Short term ranges from -8 to about +8

Vanos, if it works, don't fix it

Replace the seals in the Vanos--you will be glad you did--you only think that they are OK. Once you replace them you will then understand--they will awaken the engine like no other mod I could suggest , other than a super charger or turbo---my 2 cents issued
