2008 BMW X5 Front Brakes

Last week I got a notification from the display panel of my 2008 BMW X5 (3.0L) to replace my front brake pads. I was reading posts on these forums as well as a few other forums and was a bit confused regarding the same.

The dealership has recommended changing the rotors along with the brake pads. A few posts I read recommended doing this too since the "newer" BMWs come with 'softer' rotors and they usually get worn out before the brake pads. A few posts went on to say that rotors should be fine. Is there a specific year that BMW started making 'softer' rotors? If not, then is it still mandatory to replace the rotors along with the brake pads?

Thanks in advance for the advice/opinion.

I have an idea...Start searching for a good indy shop. Ask them if they will do a front brake job if you provide the parts. Once they say yes, order new rotors, pads, and a brake sensor from Tischer. With the money you save by not going to the dealer, and ordering your own parts, you will be able to put new rotors on. It will almost be like you are getting free rotors.

They are repair shops that service a given manufacturer of car, but are not authorized service centers, so they are not an option when doing maintenance/repairs while a car is under warranty. Very often, these "indy"(short for independant) repair shops employ technicians that once worked at BMW dealerships.

sorry, coudnt rsist- Independents.. just an auto mechanic that is independent of BMW. ie not a dealer. They usually are cheaper (but not always) than a dealer. You can usually find recommendations on line- yelp, or here, or other forums...


2. Stop getting all twisted up with 'softer' rotors... the fact is that rotors AND pads wear. The key issue is that BMW, with their silly brainless "CBS" display, ONLY tracks pad wear. In the old days you would check ads and rotors periodically, and replace as necessary. Now BMW lets you go 20k before it tells you the pad is worn. If you were to just replace the pads, the rotors might well wear far bekow their minimum before the pads wear out again. Thus, they have you replace pads and rotors as one.

If you can commit to cchecking pads and rotors yourself, every 10k miles or so, then just replace pads or rotors when they get low- there are minimum inspection thicknesses on both.

But if you'll just go by the dash, the ONLY way I'd skip rotors would be IF the rotors- after one set of pads- is AT or LESS than 50% used. (This means they can 'withstand' anohter full set of pads before being below spec

3. Last time I looked, I think you can buy pads, rotors and a pad sensor at getbmwparts.com for about $400. Take me an hour to pop on in my garage. Pray tell what is the dealer charging you??

Lol - thought I would get a comment about Indy Car racing... :P

Dealer is charging ~800-850 for both rotors and pads. I checked with an indy shop here and he said it'll cost me $790. If the difference is so less, I'd just go with the dealership. I'll probably get a 10% discount coupon or something anyways.

Front Brakes data point for a E70 2011 X5d in S. CT.

Indy shop quoted $805 for Front Brakes and Discs.

Surprisingly, the dealer quoted $749 - including loaner and wash.

Parts Cost

Front Pads : $186
Rotor : $165
Sensor : $29

Oddly, the dealer quoted $289 for an oil service vs $125 at the indy because "the UREA is topped off - that's worth probably $150" .... or $12 if you buy it at a VW shop or Autozone!

Did you check your rotor price? It looks like a price for a single rotor. My quick search on discounted OEM parts are these:

Front rotors $121 x2 = $242
Pads: $77
Sensors: $25

For a full front set replacement in parts alone, will cost about $350 based on my prices above. So they charge $300 in labor for a 2 hour job, sounds reasonable for dealer pricing. Indies don't go much cheaper than $150 an hour, or not in SF, CA anyways..

Ah - good pt. My bad, that was for one rotor. Agreed that seems indy prices in NE aren't much less for brakes. Oil service at the indy much less for some reason.

So, front brakes inc pads/discs for my 2011 X5 35d (E70) ended up costing ~$735 at the dealer :

34 11 6 852 253 Front Brake Pads $186.70
34 11 6 793 244 Brake Discs ($165.25x2) $330.50
34 35 6 792 567 Brake Wear Sensor $28.65
Misc bolts/cleaner/paste $ $10
785 Labor $179.93

Added bonus is that BMW is offering a rebate (upto $200) on OEM parts installed at an authorized BMW center between Apr 1 - May 31, 2016. I'm getting $100 back from doing the fronts!

Amazon prime drops the parts at my place, and in less time then it takes for me to do a round trip to the dealer I can do one axle. $350 total. Just anohter data point

with the prices you quote the deler is making another 250 (at least) on the parts ...

YMMV with dealers. Was quoted $1200 to do the rears at the dealer in one of the most liberal cities in the US located across the SF bay.

$1200! I'm buying parts, doing it myself, and spending the difference on a good case of wine.

Agree - YMMV. Some dealers have adopted the "Value Service Program" which is designed specifically to compete for off warranty BMW service business.

Of course DIY will always be most cost effective, but you have to have the time, tools, knowledge, motivation, etc. And limited warranty on DIY work

Time? DO it over weekend. It is not like owners of X5 work in McDonalds during the day and in Burger King during the night.
Tools? Average owner of X5 can easily afford all the tools.
Knowledge? It is acquired, so youtube and various other web sites have plenty of explanation.
Motivation? Put on one side $1200 and on other amount of money necessary to purchase roar rotors and pads and you will get motivated easily.
Limited warranty? It is not ECU. We are talking about brakes.
Even better, if you have teenage son make him do it. He will lear something useful other then playing video games and surfing Facebook.

I too used to be pretty DIY-militant.

Ive mellowed.

I agree with all the points made- especially about the kids.

My goal is simple:

People should make the decision based on 'my time/ is it worth it/ cost/benefit for me'... and NOT "I cant afford it; I am getting taken to the cleaners; but I have no choice because I am scared of mechanical things"

My goal with my kids is "know whats involved; know that you COULD do it; decide if you want to pay or DIY"


As I wrote above it is 40 minutes to the BMW dealer- I can do one axle in the time it takes to do a single round trip. (Which is only half of a dealer service visit since you need to pick the car up later too.)

Finally, futzing around the garage on a Saturday morning is fun for me. So there's that...
