CIC Nav Updates Available

I did mine for free, downloaded maps and it did not ask me for a code. Changes? Very hard for me to tell as the car is brand new. I like the way BMW does their upgrades compared to other manufacturers.

What was you model year AND production date?

My 2012, built in oct 2011, came with 2011 map data. I did not need the FSC code, as BMW preloaded that CODE when the built it, even though the map data was not yet released....

Good info. Probably don't need to demonstrate the error- just make sure the document it as your complaint, on the work order in writing...then mention the sib to the SA ....they don't need to put the sib in writing, but make sure he passes it on. Should be no skin off their nose if the sib tells them 'if they complain of X, then do Y"

Mine is 2012 x5d with a September 2012 build date.

why would you spend $245 for this, when you can get it for ~$100???

I'm having trouble upgrading mine using 32gb stick. I inserted the USB stick to the center console input while the engine was running & nothing happened. I waited for at least 15 min just to make sure but no response at all. all files were saved on root file using FAT32. am I doing it different?

You insert the usb to the glove compartment usb. The center console will not work. Then it will detect the new map when you power up. After flashing, I had to put in new address and drive to it to get rid of a stupid unknown address warning.

Just a question for you all. I find the Navigation system almost worrthless and a pain to use while on the road. My phone offers better Nav software, is more accurate, and tells me turn by turn directions BEFORE I get to the turn. It just works better and is more reliable and accurate.

I've always said that Cell phones offer robust functionality that doesn't need to be upgraded like a car and frankly, just woks better overall. I guess I still don't understand why drivers even use in car NAV technology? I wish they merely provided the ability to tether my iPhone screen to the onboard screen. That's all I want and need as it relates to NAV, the phone, email, text, etc.

Us drivers use it because car manufacturers want to make $$ and resist any cheap technology that will jeopardize their revenues as much as possible.

On a side note, unless you have maps pre-loaded on our phone, good luck relying on just a phone for some ski trip in the mountains.

I hardly use the navigation system to input destinations while on the road. I input my destinations on Google Maps while at home and send them to my X5. This works great.

same here.

And why do people get a car with build in nav? because it's integrated, the screen is bigger than on my phone, and the gps location is more accurate.

Also if I used a non integrated GPS the directions would not be viewable on my heads up display. I use that always.

using google maps, you can search for a destnation, then click on "more" and send the address to your car. It will show up as a message and you can then just select it as a destination instead of having to enter it in "Manually"

Here's what I discovered.

1. When using a PC/Laptop, etc to access Google Maps online, I see this option. You select your vehicle and enter your BMW Assist email and it sends a message to your vehicle. So far so good.
   
2. When attempting this on my iPhone - either via browser or via app, there's no visible option to send to vehicle. You can share via email, but there's no ability to select a vehicle and enter your BMW assist ID?. AmI missing something?
   
3. It seems that if you buy the BMW package for $199/yr, you can get Google maps displaying within your Vehicle, thus bypassing the OEM equipped, in car Navigation screen. Sounds like what I want, but is the user experience much improved?

Thanks gain for the tips..I never would have known about this. I wonder what else I'm missing. My wife primarily drives the car so maybe that's why.

I've been a long time user of Verizon Navigator on my phone. Has worked amazing anywhere I travel. Love it!...It tells me turn by turn before getting to there and has been amazingly accurate.

When I get into a rental car at the airport, it's what I use to get to and from hotel, meetings, etc. Plus I can save these destinations on my phone. The maps are far more updated than what you can get in a vehicle, and in my experience, my phone navigation is BETTER than the BMW navigation system that put me on a dead end street recently. The same location on my phone got me to the correct place.

Moreover, entering an address on my phone is a very simple and effective process compared to the car navigation system.

X5X5 - When travelling i use navigaiton on my VZW phone as well, no argument there.

You need to download the My BMW Remote app, then use the google local search option under the "control" button. Don't waste your money on the BMW package. All you get is local search through google. I am pretty sure you don't get the maps or street view unless you have the newest version of iDrive in the 7 series.

You can get the new maps for $50 if you have a 32gb USB. This is with FSC code. I did the same. Easy to download. You can find information on F10 forum. Look for 2013 nav update thread. Ask Shawn.

Finally updated my maps. For DC metro area folks, seems like the Springfield mixing bowl is up to date, but no ICC in MD. I'd say the update is barely worth $50 (thanks for the above referral).
One interesting observation, the update went fine, but now in Options -> Navi version there's nothing, just blank screen. I wonder if my CIC (built 12/09) firmware better be updated.
