The BMW 5-Series (E39 chassis) was introduced in the United States as a 1997 model year car and lasted until the 2004 when the E60 chassis was released. The United States saw several variations including the 525i, 528i, 530i and 540i. -- View the E39 Wiki |

Hi, my right rear tail light is not working. I get the dash message "check brake lights". I swapped the bulbs with the left side and all bulbs work. I took 12v dc across the connector pins on the lamp, and all bulbs work. The running lamp works fine as it normally would. The high mounted stop lamp doesn't work (bulb is working fine). Any suggestions?

What year and model. On my 04 330i the light was on I took it to BMW to have the oil changed the guy there said there was a recall on the lights something about not being grounded right. Maybe that's your problem they did it for free so .

Did you check the connector for corrosion?

Yes. I checked for corrosion on the connector, and it really clean. Not a hint of corrosion.

Sorry for not being specific on the model. It's a 2003, 530i, manual transmission. The ground looks good. I checked the connector wire ground with the body ground and got very low resistance. I think that's good.

So the brake light, turn indicator, backup light and LED tail light all do not work?

I'm guessing that you need to replace the socket for the third brake light in the back window. It goes bad cause these symptoms and drives owners crazy until they replace it.

Correct. Also, the yellow flashing light that goes on when I lock the doors. It might be the emergency flashers, too. The only light that works is the running lamp. Also, the high mounted stop lamp doesnt' work.

Correct. The only lamp that works is the running lamp on the right side. The blinker, backup light, LEDs, and the yellow flasher that is used when I lock the doors (it might be the emergency flasher lamp, too, but I'm not sure). Also, the high mounted stop lamp doesn't work.

Hi. The high mounted stop lamp socket looks very good, too. No corrosion, no damage.

What do you guys think about this response that I found on: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=1352393 ?
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Just for information purposes...all external lights are controlled by the LCM (light control module)...there isn't a "fuse" that controls them...this can be verified by looking at the fuse index card in the glovebox and on the back of the battery compartment fold down door. (no fuses for external lights...take a look see) Can you reveal what made you remove the tail light in the first place? For those of us out here on the internet...it's as if a big piece of the puzzle is missing. Most people wouldn't remove an entire rear light assembly just to remove it (but I guess it's possible) ...could it be something else that is causing the problem?
